Default What are the closest in spec current Martins to the discontinued D-28 Marquis?

The Custom Expert 37 D-28 Authentic (non aged)?

Find a used Marquis if that's what you really want. I know, no help at all.

I suggest playing several different D-28 configurations and find the one that sounds best to you.
Lots of good choices.

Honestly, nothing. They no longer offer an EIR / Adi model. If a dealer is offering a Adirondack-topped D-28, that's the best current search term you can start with. HTH

You could look at this model to see if it approaches what you want: Martin Sweetwater Select 28 Style Herringbone Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar with Modified V Neck and Adirondack Top

Find a used D-28 Marquis. The Last ones made in 2016 are just starting to enter their prime while the earlier ones are sounding great by now. It takes about eight years for the red spruce to begin opening up.

They are one of my favorite guitars to play.

Mark@Reno's has several Custom Shop D-28's with Adirondack tops in stock;

https://www.guitarhotline.com/martin...+Wood=Rosewood

I got a D-18 Adirondack from him last year and I couldn't be more pleased with it. I got it in September and I like it so much that in December, I order a Custom Shop Jumbo.

Close. The Custom Expert 37 D-28 Authentic has Adirondack spruce top and EIR rosewood back and sides, same as the D-28 Marquis--though the former gets hide glue construction while the latter doesn't. The Martin page mentions that the Custom Expert 37 D-28 is "available only at custom shop expert dealers" (on a separate page, Martin provides links to custom shop expert dealers in the US, Canada, and international locations).

The Martin Custom Shop D Size 28 Style with Adirondack Spruce Top is ostensibly a possible candidate, but note that it comes with aging toner applied to the top and bears non-Scalloped, forward shifted X bracing; both the Custom Expert 37 D-28 Authentic and the D-28 Marquis possess scalloped, forward shifted X bracing.

Gruhn’s sells customs similar to the Marquis. So does Mark at guitarhotline.com. Look for Adirondack tops, East Indian rosewood and GE bracing. The mod v neck of the original adds to the tone, but I prefer the playability of the newer shaped necks. The authentic bracing adds to the tone, but it usually comes with the authentic shaped neck, which is an acquired taste.

Agree with the posters who recommended a Renos or Gruhn's custom. The D-28 Custom Authentics with their all-hide-glue construction, thinner fingerboards, much more scalloped Authentic series bracing, thicker neck block, thinner head stock, etc etc are too different in overall build to the D-28 Marquis that it's apples and oranges.

Hovishead….
Not sure where you’re located but Manchester Music Mill (no affiliation, just a consistently happy customer) in New Hampshire is having a Martin event on 6/18 which will include Reps from Martin’s Custom Shop. They will be bringing sets of wood with them for you to select for a custom build. I’m sure they would build what you want but not sure the price point will bring a smile to your face.

My advice is to find a good used D-28 Marquis if that's what you really want. They're out there...just few and far between...best of luck!
