Default YouTube analytics....

According to my video analytics only 8 tunes of 27 have an average listening duration of more than 50%, only 2 of those are slightly over 60%.

I guess I really don't have to record the entire tune as no one is going to listen to the entire thing any way

Most of them are in the 30% - 40% range.

Don't let it ruin your day!
I never knew you could do that. How do you access this kind of info on your channel?

Go to your channel and then on the left side select "Your videos" and then "Analytics."

To be fair, many of your videos are over 1 minute. Nice playing!

I think that's not untypical. Even myself, watching something I like, I bet I don't usually make it thru the whole thing unless it's short.

I would suggest that if your videos were actual live performances of you playing, it might get people to watch a bit longer than when it's a slide show. No guarantee, but worth a try. When there's no compelling reason to watch - it's just music, then I'm less likely to sit glued to the computer.

Yes, live videos always outdo slideshows I have noticed. I was just thinking about trying a "live" video again. I have a mic for my phone.

One: that's just the nature of the beast. People don't tend to watch all the way through *any* video, regardless of content.

Two: It's an average. You may have one person be really interested and watch pretty much the whole thing, then two more who listen a few bars and move on. The average is 33%; that doesn't mean nobody listens to the entire song.

Three: Yes, performance or other cool video is way better than slideshows. My videos are almost all "live", or produced music videos, and most have around 50% viewed (for songs mostly longer than yours). The really cool animated video I did gets over 60%.

That's about typical for my shop's YouTube videos. There's always a steep drop-off in the first few seconds, then it levels out with a slow decline.

The statistic from my analytics that blows my mind: 99.4% of my listeners are male - I guess men are much more into guitar demos than women!

I'm glad Soundcloud doesn't tell me things like that - a fool's paradise is still paradise (for a while, anyway).

Honestly I think that 8 out of 27 over 50% is pretty darn good
I have 90 vid's up and 16,522 views BUT only a handful get over 50% in fact my "Lifetime" overall average is 38%

Maybe you know this but it should be noted (For general info) that there are different time duration selections. So when you open the analytics page I believe it opens to the default "Last 28 Days" so for a better overall idea, you want to select "Life Time" from the dropdown because the % numbers do change with different time selections

I don't know what the point is of the YT posts that you are doing. I am a terrible audience in that I figure I understand what an entertainer is doing quickly, and it takes a special sauce for me to be entertained. If I am trying to pick up some technic or lick the same reasoning applies. I often jump past the first minute of YTs as they are often a waste of time. I would think that the facts point out the need for something to be done around the 45% point to keep them watching. What that something is would be the creative aspect for success.

I'm attempting to play cleanly and musically using a classical guitar. Once I get closer to where I want to be I will also start using my steel strings again playing Celtic and other "folk" tunes as I have in the past

My videos aren't going to be entertaining to anyone I suppose. Maybe to another beginning classical player. I'm really just sharing my journey and yes, I suppose it is pointless. I like tinkering with my microphones, DAW and plug-ins though.

Judging by the amount of Show and Tell postings a lot of people enjoy creating videos and sharing them. Most of them are not professional quality, but no one tells them it's pointless.

I don’t look at that stuff. I just record the songs and put them up there. But I do know most people are only going to watch a portion of it, because that’s what I do. Only my kids watch the whole thing.
