Hello, I see a lot of dont want to sound like, or I sound like me responses. Thats fine and everything, but I have to ask- or should I say- wanted to ask... Well who do you sound like when you are singing along with the radio, or singing your favorite song? I wanted to know, who or which songs can you sing well? Surely you don't sound like froggy singing a Keith Whitley song? That can't be your favorite to sing/sing like, can it?
I get it, I don't sound like some of my favorite artists when I play and sing my own songs... that does sound a bit silly. And I only have a few parts total that I lower the boom and hit'em with that deep voice. <in my own songs that is. But like I say, if Randy comes on, well, imma sing it better than most can. I like to think Randy would be proud. Same with the other song I mentioned- Atlanta Blue... I just don't know anyone who can sing it. Okay, carry on!

Much as I might like to, I always sound like myself. And I am good with that.
The famous singers who others wish to emulate would probably be relieved to know that, if they ever chanced to hear me. Which is, admittedly, is, not likely.

My singing voice used to be compared to Johnny Cash a lot, but I don’t aim for the low notes as much as I used to so I don’t hear that one as often. My songwriting has been compared to Father John Misty several times - I’ve never listened to him so I can’t comment on that. Also Townes Van Zandt - I find him too depressing so I’m not keen on the comparison!

I find a lot of Gordon Lightfoot songs suit my range and timbre, and I love his stuff. I wouldn't flatter myself to say I sound like him though. Here's a couple of GL songs I like to do.
https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=685021 On this forum I think I probably sound very, very, very Irish to a lot of people, although honestly my Irish accent is fairly mild compared to many of my countrymen.

Hah. At least you could have provoked an amusing reaction from Chuck Berry.

I took voice lessons for two months. I asked the teacher starting out how long people generally took lessons before they felt comfortable singing. He said it all depended on whether one was happy just sounding like themself or if they are trying to sound like someone else. If it were the latter, forever.

I used to be good at mimicking a lot of popular artists... I'd even throw in some cockney inflections for songs by British bands. I'd mess with my syllabic inflections when singing Dylan to try and recreate his unique style. I could sound like a lot of different performers/artists back in the day.
Now? I dunno. I think I just think more about what I am doing and much less about how it sounds to the listener.

Leo Kottke who famously compared his voice to "geese farts on a muggy day."

He wasn’t wrong. I went to see him live in Amsterdam and could barely decipher the low drone of his mumbling between songs.

A strange comparison. Who in the world would know what a goose fart sounds like on a muggy day, besides Leo Kottke I guess? Frankly, I don't know what a goose fart sounds like period. Anyway, he's done pretty well for himself as a guitar player and a singer, so he must not be too bad.

I don't think I sound like anyone else; I just sound like me. And I was never one to try to mimic someone else's voice quality. I like trying to copy someone else's guitar style to see what I can learn and pick up, but I have never tried to copy someone else's voice.
