I was reading about cicada killer wasps, their only natural enemy. They paralyze and then fly with and drag the cicadas down their tunnels. They lay an egg on each cicada which becomes the food source. Ought to be a big year for the wasps too. Mr Owen, my guy is headed to Merlefest soon, are you close by there and do you attend?

Hi Tunesalot, I am near, but this year I can’t go because I’m traveling. I’ve been to many. I hope he has a good one.

There's also going to be a thing called "zombie cicadas". Seriously.

Well, I still haven't seen a single one.

Looks like the media overplayed this.

I'm in St. Louis, and these things are all over the place. Thousands upon thousands.

The buzzing is deafening. Pretty cool, actually, I'm glad I got to experience this historic hatch.

But they are dying off now. I'll find numerous dead ones on the driveway every morning.

Oh they are here alright...

My neighborhood is kind of interesting...there's a street that divides it, and one half is much older, houses 100 years old and up...I live on the "new" side, houses built just after WWII. The old side was originally woods, then residential, my side was a farm (again, pre WWII) so the trees on my side were all planted within the last 70-80 years or so...

My side is pretty much cicada free...but cross that street and WOW. Old trees=lots of cicadas.

2021 was a big cicada year. On the road to Coker Creek Tennessee we
began to hear a howling and stopped to see what it was...

I don’t think a slogan that can be used once every 221 years is going to be a money maker.

They are here as well. People in town who have larger trees have FB pics of piles of them on the ground at the base of the trees. Weirdly we don't have hardly any here as this is a fairly new development and the trees are fairly small.

221 years' worth of buildup!
