The Shure SM58 is a great mic for not much cash.
Its pretty much a standard for clubs

well, the old standard Shure SM57 (instrument) and SM58 (vocal) are pretty hard to beat, especially if you are going to find one used. If your power source or mixing board has phantom power for condensor's that opens up a lot of other possibilities, but the cost will go up a bit as well. I've found the AKG C430 to be a great mic for instruments for the money.

We need to know your budget in order to recommend the right microphone.

I agree with the SM57 and 58 comments above. Good standards to go with for the money.

Thanks for the quick responses.

I should have mentioned that tho I don't wish to "break the bank". I am not afraid on spending $XXX on something thats is not goning to let me down.

Again, I am a beginner @ 40 , so all this if for fun and my enjoyment.
explains why my first guitar is a Martin

Yep agree. I'd probably go for the SM58 as from what I've heard/read/experienced the SM58 is better for instruments than the SM57 is for vocals.

Shure SM58's for vocals and 57's for instruments are awesome. Definately industry standard workhorses. Pretty decent resale value too.

if you want to jump up the chain slightly look at the Beta versions....I've been using the 58 Beta for many years now and find it to be superior and worth the extra cost.....keep your eye out on Ebay and you'll find a deal on one....

I actually tried a few different vocal microphones in the pricing range of the SM58 Beta, and actually found that the Audix OM5 to be better for my tastes. Not to say this is the absolute way to go, but I liked it more than the Shure. Of course, there's really no way you can go wrong with a Shure, but maybe some better options sometimes.

Hope it helps.

Obviously, many will recommend the "58", but might I suggest trying Samson's R11 mics. Many online stores sell these in a 3 pack at an unbelievable low price!

I have these mics, and it works very well. But you don't have to believe me.

Here is Harmony Central's posting about this mic:

I've played since the 60's, used 58's and 57's the entire time. They are the standard and I have never had one break on me, There are certainly better recording mikes, that also cost a lot more, but for bar/stage work you can't go wrong with an SM58 for vocals.

If you can spend a little more the SM58 Beta blues are a little warmer, and have more pronouced sweet spot where you can add some bass/warmth to your voice by getting closer to the mike.

Good Luck!

I've got 3 of the Electrovoice ND767A and am very happy with them for live vocals (that's what they're designed for). Reasonably priced, too.

Default Still another SM 57/58 Vote

Can't go wrong with these puppies. More $$$ for Betas with a tad better warmth. Stick with the Chevy and forske the others!
