Default Old ugly electronics=new soundport?

I was looking at some guitars today on ebay with beautiful woods and kept thinking, "man, that rectangular cyborg plate is ugly". And then it crossed my mind, what if you could make this into a soundport instead?

Any builders around here ever do this?

This has been discussed here before. Some have tried it and I seem to remember with positive results.
