Taylor 517 or 717
I am interested to buy one of this guitars. I have a gift card that I can redeem in a European retailer and I can buy one of this models for around 2000 euros.
I am mainly an electric guitar player and I want to have an acoustic to play around at home. My main style will be strumming and fingerpicking and as far as genres will be Neil young tunes , bluesy stuff and grunge rock type of compositions. Which one will be more appropriate for playing solo at home. Mahogany or rosewood regarding those 2 models? |

I played these back to back this past weekend. A few of each. I would say that they sound more similar than different to my ears. The rosewood model has a little more bass and high end sparkle. The mahogany is more fundamental. They both have the Taylor signature sound.

In my very limited experience -- maybe two of each model, and not on the same day or in the same store -- the 517 spoke to me more than the 717, especially given the price differential. But that is my ears and my playing style. I've had a variety of rosewood /spruce guitars and only one all mahogany guitar. Maybe deep down I'm more of a fundamental tone mahogany guy, instead of a lush rosewood fan.

I’ve played several examples of both models, and like Earl I found myself preferring the mahogany 517. I just found it to be a cleaner, sweeter sounding instrument.

Hey George,
Daniel Donato plays both of the Taylor guitars you're considering in this YT video. It's worth a watch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy4rKpXpO_c Kevin
