I'm not quite sure of what you mean by a 'shielded' gig bag, but I can tell you that I've had a Blue Heron soft case since 1998 that is great. It isn't anything that I would put my guitar in luggage at the airport with, but for using once I'm at the gig it's great. I play several festivals a year that have numerous stages, and I can just put the guitar on my back and go. It also has alot of space in 2 zippered compatments to put things, like cd's to sell or tuners, capos, etc.

This may be what you're looking for:

Gator Lightweight Case

From the link:

"Gator’s Lightweight series is the perfect cross between hard case protection and gig bag weight. These cases are internally constructed of dense EPS foam and the exterior is covered in 600-denier ballistic material."

I looked at one of these before getting my Guardian hardshell. They're pretty slick.

Breedlove acutally makes a fantastic gigbag which ships with their Atlas series guitars. And those guitars are AMAZING for the $500-$1000 range.

I haven't seen anything better than the Tribal Planet gig bags. They are very high quality and not too expensive. I never hesitate to put any of my guitars in this bag.

Fine Cases has them here.

Try the Fort EPP case - you can find it through
http://www.seagullguitars.com/fortepp.htm

It isn't inexpensive, but it is unique and only weighs 2.5 pounds.

I don't know who makes the new Epiphone guitar cases, but they remind me of a Travelite Mandolin case. Very light like a gig bag, but they have a ton of reinforcement padded foam to take the shock. They feel like a hard case on the outside, but have a fabric cover.

ProTec also makes a case similar to what is being described in this thread. I have two of them, they are lightweight with tons of storage, but offer a little more protection than a gig bag type case. But they are also a little more awkward to wear on your back than the soft cases are.

That's what the Gator Lightweight cases are like; they feel like a hardshell but with a thin fabric around them.

InCase cases/gigbags are worth the $149-$199 price. Ive recieved compliments and questions on where to buy them each time Ive carried it out. They received multiple best product awards from Vintage Guitar, Acoustic guitar magazine etc. when they were first released about a year 1/2 ago.

Ive two - one for acoustic and a bass size which I can use
for guitar or bass. I trust my Goodall and my Tom Anderson guitars
if necessary to tote around.

The carrying strap/harness system is extremely comfortable/ergonomic and the case is engineered well for combination of protection, strength and lightweight qualities. Also a very handsome design and neutral color.

They also offer a 30 day satisfaction guarantee -although you wont
have to use it. You can order one thru their website and UPS ground shipping
is included in total price.

I have no affliliation with the mfg- just a satisfied customer
