Martin 00018e Retro live gig NGD demo follow up NEW 2nd VID ADDED @ POST #40!!
Hey friends,
* Here's a maiden voyage of my new Martin 000-18e Retro at cozy venue in Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, bad acoustics with glass and concrete floors but hey it's a chillax oppurtunity to test n tweak live as the nite wound down on Christmas Eve-Eve. ** The customizing I did prior to this in Performance Mode did not please me tonite and so I did not have time to monkey with it too much so I switched into Easy Mode. Thankfully Easy Mode has my fav mic Image anyway which is a warm ribbon mic and a Neumann U67 which I like for my flesh fingerstyle that I play in this video...you'll hear me talk about the settings as I tweak according to what I hear right then, live tweaking! *** Switching phase and rollin' the mid-scoop tone control to 90% and volume to 95% dialed in a nice, "natural" tone on the fly and I'm going directly into my Loudbox Performer that has onboard delay that I have on a just a touch...I simply recorded with my canon HD Camera, nuthin' fancy. **** Do I like it better then my Cooltube equipped MIJ Tak? It's a bit more natural, but not warm as the tube gives, but plugging in is always a compromise eh ladies n gents? ***** Just click on the link below to listen to a lil' original intro noodlin' and Sweet Baby James, it's a public FB link, so you don't have to sign in. https://www.facebook.com/eric.alabis...6405672588953/ eric

Really enjoyed the plugged-in tone, and you barely tweaked at all.
I truly believe it’s the performer more than the gear. Merry Christmas, Eric. |

The new guitar sounds beautiful, Eric, but I suspect that you'd make any guitar sound really nice!

Congratulations!
One gig down and if it was me, ha ha, a re-evaluation and a short nervous breakdown! I can hear the windows in your video. What seems like 200 years ago, I played in a (blues) band and a couple of the joints we played were like your gig - lots of windows, cement floor. One was a cafe something or other, that on the first night of 4, oh no!, I could not get a sound and felt like going home early. But we had a roll of ‘blacks’ (thin black cloth), that we lugged around to create a ‘stage area’ between the speakers at the back and our comprehensive lighting system always looked great on it (1 blue light, 1 red light), but the main reason for carrying it around was to deaden rooms with too live a sound. The 2nd week we got there a bit early, gaffa’d the blacks around the bottom half of the windows and Voila! Echoes and reflections gone! It wasn’t a lot of work....5 seconds. Now, how long into playing did you decide P mode wasn’t working? My guess, but the Easy mode settings may have had a lower % of image, which along with the window reflections made your sound ‘microphonic’. Possibly, if you had the black curtain, it may have been fine. So don’t give up on the settings just yet - not until you try them in a less live room. Was that you that played on the outside deck upstairs? No reflections at all there! I have an article by Guitarist UK magazine on the Retros when they first came out and I did a search to see if it was online, sorry only some was - but they tested the D18e and HD28e fully, but there was a sidebar where an editor used the OM28e on his band tour for the acoustic sections, and he used all the settings but after a couple of gigs reverted to using the 3 Easy mode settings! And he thought most live guitarists would do the same and use P mode for recording situations. Phew, got an aching tap finger! BluesKing777. |

I'd be interested in hearing, but not if I have to do Facebook to do so.
Any other presentation media? |

Man, that really sounds great. That's the kind of performance I'm striving for in my shows, but I'm nowhere close. I sing OK but my playing is very simple and basic, especially compared to yours.
P.S. Do you have an "audience mute" pedal? Those people sure are chatty!

Merry Christmas Eric.
That was fantastic. By the way, I sold my Fishman Solo and picked up a small Loudbox ARTIST. It has cool effects I have never used before... especially for vocals. I love the sound you are getting. Is this a Loudbox? What do you have on the vox?
