Soundport post-build addition to a Webber 00
I love my Webber 00 (chocolate cedar / maple, 2010) purchased several years ago on the forum from a respected member (thanks Rob!). I added fretboard markers - same drill as documented here for a Webber Roundbody: http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/f...d.php?t=357298 Then I got it in my head to try a soundport in the Webber 00. Was a bit nervous, but steeled up, my luthier said he could do it, and I pulled the trigger two years ago. Finally got around to taking photos to share my experience here.
I had both the fret marker and soundport work done by Andrew Madsen, a luthier based in Neenah, WI. He did a great job, and I can tell the difference with the soundport both in volume as a player, and also a slight shift tonally. Which I love. Was more expensive by a chunk than adding fret markers. If you're considering this, be sure your target guitar is likely a "lifetime" one. Just like home improvements, I'd guess one will not recoup the cost on resale... Anyway, below is one "before" photo and two "after" ones. In this case, the before includes before fret markers were added, so it's a double-mod comparison. Would love any thoughts or feedback, but most of all - I offer this as helpful info for interested AGF'ers! I have one guitar with a sound port, my McKnight, which I love. But I also love my guitars without a sound port. I have guitars with no fret board markers, and those that have them. As long as I can readily see markers on the side of the neck, that's sufficient for practical purposes.
Your Webber looks nice, both before and after the additions. What matters is whether you like your guitar better afterward. Since you do, I say congratulations. cotten |

CC, the usual phrase used to describe the addition of an aperture to the upper bout of an acoustic guitar is "sound port" or, when written as one word, "soundport." "Soundhole" refers to the larger aperture in the top.
Not that it makes any huge difference, but keeping those separate helps avoid confusion. Anyway, glad you're happy with the results. whm |

Can you elaborate a little about the tonal shift.

Beautiful guitar, and I'm glad you're happy with the results.
For someone who's not a luthier (but has a cabinetmaker shop), I assume there is more to the job than drilling a nice hole and finishing the edges. Moving braces? Some kind of diagnostics to determine the optimum hole location?

Id like to try a soundport but like others its scary cause what will it do to an already good sounding guitar.
Comments: it seems a little big and more downhill than I would have thought given that the strongest section of the side is at the apex of the upper bout. |

I really enjoy the way a soundport aids my personal audible enjoyment of the music I play.
It makes it possible to hear more of what i'm playing during jams with lots of other folks.

That's a beautiful Webber. I'm also curious how the size of the sound port was determined.

I'm happy that you like it. Did you consider something a bit more artistic than a big round hole? Several small ones? Other shapes?
Perhaps: http://www.guitarsara.com/wp-content.../soundport.jpg or http://www.cominsguitars.com/sites/d...?itok=KHQPEvmP You could still do something like this... http://www.foroflamenco.com/upfiles/1443/Xv65410.jpg Last edited by Mycroft; 07-03-2017 at 01:53 PM. Reason: Added links. |
