Default Sailing for the Holidays

My holiday will be spent on a 44' sailboat traveling from Bimini to Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

The itinerary arrived last night and it looks like this, beginning the 22nd and ending the 2nd of Jan.

There will be three humans, two guitars and a ukulele on the boat.

Last time I was on this boat I fell, ripped an ACL and cracked a tibia, as we crossed the gulf stream in a storm on the way to Bimini. Lesson learned from that was FLY to Bimini.

Take two!

Yah Mon!

Yes, the gulf stream can be a tricky piece of business when crossing on a schedule. It doesn't take much of a northerly breeze to make things interesting and downright dangerous on a small vessel. Crossing is never a board and go activity as an eye to the weather is a must.

Enjoy the Bahamas. It is a magical place!

Liked the map/schdule. So you are flying in a T6 - Harvard/Texan ? One of my ambitions ...sadly it seems to be flying backwards.

If you don't get this Amy, don't worry it'll only appeal to plane nerds - have a great one !

All I can say is.... "bourgeois capitalist pig!"

You do know that envy is a sin. I shall repent..................one day!

Enjoy your break (but only of the holiday variety!!!!)

Looks like both plane and boats are backwards! Silly drawing program stamps had limited choices.

Hope all goes well and you have a great trip, Amy. My sojourn to Richmond seems pretty tame by comparison, but maybe I can spruce things up a bit if it turns warm with a side trip to the coast....

No, I don't - can you suggest a few to start with?

I hope we don't have to send bail, but you do know we'd help out. They also did The Sloop John B, of course.

Be careful; watch the weather. I have a friend who was charged with delivering a 50' cat from Charleston, SC to the BVI in a very narrow window in mid-December. They got caught by a relatively routine storm and wound up being rescued by the USCG off the coast of North Carolina, over 400 miles north of their intended route. Your route should keep you well south of those types of storms, but they aren't unknown, even in the waters off of south Florida.

I lived through a stormy crossing of the Gulf Stream once and that was enough for me!
We were delayed trying to get an auto pilot calibrated, which never happened after all because of the beginning of the storm was already in the works roughing up the water. So we lost the good travel window, crossed our fingers, and went for it.

I don't think we made it four hours off the coast of Florida before we got pummelled and spent the next 48 or more hours dealing with 10' swells and rogue waves and wind and it still makes me clench up tight to remember that trip!

halfway through, i took a fall, slammed my knee into the leg of the captain's chair - and 'craaaaack' went my tibia, and 'riiiiip' went the ACL. Didn't walk without crutches for almost three months.

Wear your safety gear. Take a storm jib and good wind-vane steering gear. Oh..and like I have done on 45 and 55-footers.....have a BLAST!
