Default G7th Performacnce 2 Capo - worn out?

I loved my G7th P2 when I first got it - quick to move into place (stored on the end of the headstock) and no retuning needed on my Taylor when I moved it anywhere up the neck.
Now, however, it seems to be finicky to position behind the fret, and sometimes I cannot get the string buzz to stop - sometimes high strings, sometimes low - no matter how much I try repositioning. There does seem to be some depressions worn into to the rubber pad - this capo is only about 2 years old, and I don't use it THAT much, is this typical? At $40+ I would expect it to last a lot longer!

Do you take the capo off when you store the guitar. Leaving the capo on all the time is a good way to put permanent grooves in the rubber pad. I believe replacement pads are available.

I'm pretty sure Nick at G7th offers warranties on all of his capos. Why don't you give him a shout? He's easy to get in touch with and wonderful to work with. See what he has to say. Here's the link:

Thanks, Toby. I'll take a picture of it and send it off in an email tonight.

Was curious to others' experiences with this model.
(And of course I take it off the guitar when I'm done using it!)

I have not had a problem with either of the G7th Performance 2s that I own and use but it did take a bit of time to find the sweet spot in terms of tension. I prefer the yoke style capos so use mostly my Elliott's and G7th Heritage these days.

Best,
Jayne

If there are worn grooves then you need new pads. If not then consider the possibility that the neck needs an adjustment after humidity / temperature changes over time, etc. and the capo is fine.

I would think ^ this is more the issue. Maybe not so much the capo but I would think that your guitar might need an adjustment.

I had a Taylor-authorized service guy do a set up on it in February. The buzzing has been getting worse since about 2 months after that.

Why on earth would you think the guitar might be the problem? Lots of people have had difficulties with these capos, and there are lots of threads about them. G7th customer service is indeed very good but after playing guitar for over 50 years, the G7th performance capo is the only one I've ever had to return.
I must say that I am now quite happy with the G7th Newport and may one day try a heritage.

I have both the gen 1 and gen 2 G7th Performance Capo and they are both going strong.

I would say I have maybe 700 to 1000 hours of use on the 1st generation and about 500 to 700 hours of use on the 2nd one.

I have noticed that on certain rare instances, I get a strange buzz on the 2nd generation, but that is easily resolved by me putting the capo closer to the fret (so more my error than the capo itself).

Although you mention having a set up 2 months before...is it possible you just crossed the border in requiring a fret job?

I just thought of something else. I'm also located in the Northeast, and around this time many folks do have fret buzzing issues with their guitars. Is it possible that the humidity might be a factor? All kinds of crazy things happen around this time of year regarding that. The reason I put that out there was because I had the same problem a few years ago when I put on a capo. Once I properly humidified my guitar, the problem was solved.

Or... as you said, it could be an issue with the rubber on your capo. Just trying to think of other possibilities.

G7th think it may be the 'clutch' in the capo, its not quite holding the pressure after pressed into place, as the pad does not look worn enough to cause a problem. I'll report back when I try the next one.

UPDATE: sent message to G7th, they contacted me right back, I sent pics, they sent out a new one Fed-X overnight, got it this morning, it works like it should, so it was the 'clutch' on the old one - it wasn't holding tight when pressed into place.

G7th = excellent customer service!

Love to hear positive C/S stories like this. Bravo, G7th!
