He had a great sound with both Airplane and Starship. He left a fine legacy.

Well, that's too bad. We are reminded once again that life is short.
I was a big fan of the Jefferson Airplane during their "Surrealistic Pillow" days. - Glenn

This might surprise some but, this one really hit me. The airplane was a big part of my early musical exploration and growth. This was a band I started listening to during my formative years and owned the airplane discography before I owned a single Beatles album. My parents saw the airplane at hunter college one night in the 60's where they blew all the fuses in the venue. I just broke the news to my father and I kept trying to say to him, that we've entered into an era where these heroes are all getting old but as my father just turned 74 I just couldn't because I really don't want to remind my father of his age or really anything else...ok I'm rambling sorry. I'm gonna go play we can be together to my 3 year old.

Paul Kantner and the Jefferson Airplane were pivotal parts of my life in the mid-late 60's... I was MAD for their music, listened to both "Surrealistic Pillow" and "After Bathing at Baxter's" hundreds of times, just loved those records!
Liked the later records a lot, up until they really became something other than a counter-culture band... absolutely LOVED "Blows Against The Empire"!!! That record, along with Crosby's "If I Could Only Remember My Name" had several dozen players and everyone received credit for their contribution... many of the same folks on both albums, of course. Thanks, Paul, for so much wonderful music, for your continued "Blows Against The Empire" throughout your life...

This one really hurts - even more than losing Jerry Garcia. My first exposure to the Airplane was Baxter's in my teens, which freaked me out completely, but piqued my interest sufficiently to buy a second hand copy of Flight Log. From there it was every Airplane vinyl I could lay my hands on, now replaced with CDs. I went to Reading in '88 for Starship, just to see Grace do White Rabbit & Somebody to Love (but she pulled out of that band a few weeks before). Finally got to see and meet Paul and Marty in 2003 seeing the newly resurrected Jefferson Starship (TNG) many times around the UK. The Baron was one hell of a songwriter and one of the best adverts for the 12 string guitar. Wherever he is now, I hope he's raising h**l with a vodka in one hand and a Camel in the other. In the words of GoT, "We shall never see his like again."

Another major fan of the Airplane here. Saw them a few times during the years surrounding 1970. The absolute best was a concert at Boston Symphony Hall in 1970. The opening acts were John Hammond for a few songs, plus the Steve Miller Band. I'm more than 90% sure of all these specific details, but it was a foggy time...
Seeing these old timers taking making exit, makes me consider my own life and times. Life is short, make it sweet. |

2016 is off to a rocky start. We are losing a lot of people that made some great music.
The Airplane was a huge band of that era and defined the spirit of the time. RIP Paul.

RIP. It would appear that all that 1960s cavorting produced a rather fragile geriatric generation, no?

Yeah, this one hits pretty hard. So long and thanks for the music, Mr. Kantner. From the summer of '67 forward, your tunes have been in my ears. You will be missed.
