Sinatra special on HBO
I believe the special Sinatra: All Or Nothing At All debuted on HBO last night. My wife and I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it. The HBO listing says it will be playing for the next couple of weeks.
It is worth watching. Lots of wonderful performances like Sinatra singing Old Man River at an NAACP fund raiser to an audience that included Rev. Martin Luther King; who was in tears from Sinatra's performance. I give it four thumbs up. and one for good measure

FS was before my time, so I've never been a "fan." But I watched and enjoyed the show. It was very interesting and well done. Poliitical leaders, Giants of entertainment, and Kingpins of organized crime join hands in a pretty volatile mix.

The HBO special was released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Sinatra.
I wasn't much of a fan as a young man. Sinatra sung the tunes of the Great American Songbook....the music of my parents. I loved rock and folk and so I didn't like Frank. But as I grew older and studied and learned more songs I began to appreciate the songwriters of the GASB, and eventually grudgingly Sinatra as well. So I am a musician who admires musicians who can do musical things. Take the tone of the great bandleader Harry James on the trumpet. Folks, that guy could flat out play that instrument with great intonation. I bring that last point up because Sinatra started out trying to imitate the jazz phrasing and tone of Harry James. He was phenomenally good at doing this when he was a young man...his vocal tone and phrasings were.....well they were musical...really musical....imho. (He lost a lot of tone as he grew older, too many cigarettes I think.)

We just re-watched Phil Hartman's amazing spoof of Sinatra (on SNL)...we were in stitches for the whole skit...

Must have been well-done, judging by the ads. All-star lineup. And Sheryl Crow.
