Default Hello from a new guy

I just joined this forum after looking it over. Looks like you guys cover lots of ideas and information.

Here's a little about me. I took guitar lessons in the 3rd grade because Mom thought music is good. She had been a singer in the 1950's. The guitar playing didn't last. Then when in high school I wanted to be a rock star. Played for a year or so then quit. When I was 22 years old or so I bought an Ovation. GREAT guitar. Since then I've owned a Sigma (Martin value guitars I think). That had a great sound. I had a pickup put in it. Then I had a Washburn thin body acoustic/electric. Now I have an Ibanez AW100CE. I like this guitar a lot. I did some minor work on it which I'll post about in the thread for guitar maintenance or whatever it's called.

I've played off and on all my life. I'm 58 now and retired. I haven't played in 8-10 years. Couple of months ago I started playing again and loving it. I got the "Music Theory Made Easy" from GuitarZoom and Steve Stine. I've always wanted to learn more theory but other activities prevented me from having both playing time and learning theory time.

This looks like a great place to hang out. It constantly amazes me how much info is available via the internet.

Jack

Well hello JackH! Welcome aboard, shipmate!

I'm around your age (55) and picked up guitar a few years ago, but only got serious and really trenched in and practice daily for the last year.

I have some of Steve Stine's lesson too. GREAT teacher, and amazing guitarist.

He's one of the three online guys I go to for sure.

Welcome aboard - your mom was terrific for hoping to instill music in your life.

Steve Stine is a great instructor - extremely knowledgeable with a really wonderful approach. I've met and watched a lot of instructors. I took a tiny bit of music theory in college so, not any type of expert but, I understand music teaching. I think Steve Stine is probably the "smartest" instructor I've ever seen and he has such a fantastic approach, where it's all about what YOU like and having fun and loving music and not getting hung up on things.

The smartest and most humble instructor there is.

Hi, and welcome:

We have similar stories; got my 1st Yamaha nylon as a birthday present at 7. Took lesson my mom bought for 2 weeks and then the guitar sat in the closet until my senior year of H.S. when motivated by the things that motivate H.S. kids, I began trying to learn to play in earnest. Was a dedicated learning player for a few years until I moved out my own, and was promptly burglarized. My only possessions I cared about were my Yamaha acoustic and my Gibby Les Paul and Marshall Amp. I had been playing for about 3 years and practiced at least an hour a day. I guess it took me 20 years to get over that. Although I immediately put a PRS on layaway, I never paid it off. 20 years later I walked into a GC with a $300 budget and took the best acoustic I could find (an Ibanez Artwood 100CE that I actually paid $325 for) home and have been inspired to learn and play ever since; that was 8 years ago. Recently retired that Ibanez AW100CE, after playing it into needing a neck reset, that wasn't worth the cost. Found this forum while looking for my next guitar. It's a great place to learn about all things acoustic guitar, and has expanded my love and knowledge greatly. Again, welcome!

Welcome to the forum Jack. Grab a cup of coffee and pull up a chair. There's tons of good info here. Before you go shaking your head and wondering what some things are here's a couple of tips

G.A.S. = Guitar Acquisition Syndrome - something many of us have, its a terrible affliction, lol. Many of us are always looking for the "One" guitar to have above all others.

NGD = New Guitar Day - the supposed cure for G.A.S., but it is temporary.

Welcome aboard, Jack, this is a great place, with lots of knowledgeable members. I am a member of a number of other guitar forums, as well as motorcycle, gun, knife, and even a watch forums, but the AGF is the only forum I visit daily.

A word of warning though, watch for member kydave, he thinks the Martin D-28 is the only guitar worth playing.
