Default We lost 3 guitars in a house fire.

Three guitars that we were storing at a friend's house were destroyed in a fire.

I'm not looking for sympathy; that should go to the person (not me) who lost all of his possessions and his pet. Ironically, the cat escaped the fire but was hit by a car and killed. Truly tragic.

The (electrical) fire was caused by a power surge from a thunderstorm. It started in the closet where two of the guitars were stored; they were incinerated. The firefighters saved one guitar that was in another area, but the case has melted shut and needs to be pried open. I'm guessing that its ruined too. Inside the melted case is a hand made Spanish guitar purchased in Mexico City in 1994.

Incinerated:
1973 Starfield 670-12 blonde (EC++ cond.). A 42 yr old heirloom. See quote from 2012 below:

1996 Yamaha APX4. Not worth much, but it was also in EC++ condition. it was the blue model with the elevated rosette.

These guitars had tremendous sentimental value; each one was purchased during special occasions that are dear to both of us. We are waiting for pics of the opened (melted) case. The fire was in Michigan, and we are in San Diego. The guitars were stored there for safe keeping.

It's made by Ibanez and is a clone of their Concord model.

It has all laminate construction: Maple B/S, Spruce top, Maple neck and fingerboard.

Very little play wear (closet classic), but it needs a neck reset so it is currently setup and used as a 6-string.

Here it is next to my 2001 355 Taylor: (Poor pic quality)

I have a way of finding the silver lining in times like this… It's a good enough reason to pull the trigger on that PRS Santana Signature model we've been eyeing for her!

Wow, truly unfortunate. It's amazing how such disasters can strike. I hope recovery and peace-of-mind happens soon. Good luck!

Thanks for your thoughts guys, but my loss does not extend beyond the guitars.

The house and cat were not mine.

The guitar in the case is most likely toast, for lack of a better way of saying it. My brother had a house fire and some things looked like they could be saved, then eventually started having issues. Clothes started falling apart etc. He lost most of his guns although they first appeared to be ok.

This is one of my fears, Ive got all my guitars in my guitar shop. My family of course is more important. Fires suck big time! Only can afford regular home owners insurance. But hey, cant take em with me.

Yah, we're not holding on to much hope. this is more of an inconvenience to us, however the person who owns the house lost everything. I truly feel bad for him. We were simply storing some guitars with him so we had something to play while we were there.

Funny, I was gonna use the word "toast" to describe it too. lol

That's awful, sorry to hear it. I'm sorry you lost your guitars, but I'm more sorry to hear about your cat.

Sorry to hear about the fire, I know it sucks to lose things you have sentimental attachment to - but as long as you and the family are ok you are in good shape. Good luck recovering from your loses. Possessions can all be replaced.

I am too. I have lived through three major wildfires here in Southern California and have laid witness first-hand to the suffering of wild and domestic animals who could not escape. This is all very tragic.

Since this is a guitar forum, I figured I'd stay on topic.

Although now I wonder why I decided to tell the world.

I'm glad you guys made it out, and I am sorry about the cat.

But guitars can be replaced. At least you guys are not hurt.

Losing heirlooms is tough, but at the end of the day you still have your memories, health, and family. Still, sorry to hear.

Condolences to your friend. If I lost my cat I'd be devastated - I love my cat like cr@zy.
