Default Are there any 3 chord Jason Isbell songs?

I'm the definition of a beginner, but can strum a few chords now. I want to have a carrot in front of me to work towards. Are there any isbell songs that can be played on 3 chords (no F)?

Thanks!

I'd say his most simple song is probably Outfit.

It's not three chords, but I think it's only five - and no F, IIRC. It's the song that first made me notice Jason Isbell. A recent simple one is New South Wales, although it has a walk down from D that can be tricky for a beginner.

Also, I used to...well, still do sometimes...just transpose the chords to get rid of those pesky ones that were too hard. Maybe that's an option for you?

I really like Jason Isbell, he's a GREAT performer and song writer.

Here's a list of his songs (many with chord charts available) at ultimate Guitar dot com. I'd recommend looking through this. When you find one you might want to try, look at the chart while listening to the song. That's a good learning exercise that I find very helpful.

Cover Me Up (chords linked) is close. Just D, G, Bm & Em. Also, here's a 3-finger open B minor shape that you can use instead of the barre version:

The problem with Cover Me Up is that it is in Double Drop D tuning and has a fairly complicated D riff that is kinda the signature of the song.

Live Oak is a pretty easy one and not hard to sing either. Am - Cadd9 - Dm - F. Easy, but a striking song with fantastic lyrics.

For the OP: you can avoid the F in that song (assuming you want to play it in the same key) by putting a capo on fret 5 and using the following shapes:
Em (for Am)
Gadd9 (for Cadd9)
Am (for Dm)
C (for F).

God **** lonely love and sounds fine if you play thru the Cm with a C.

Cigarettes and Wine is easy.

The F is actually an Fmaj7 and in this arrangement is played as a three finger form. It's an easy F.

Outfit is the song that came to mind for me, as well. There's an Em and an Am, but 96.4% of the song (more or less) is G-C-D. OP, if you have trouble finding Outfit, be aware that it was recorded by Drive By Truckers (JI's former band). Another possibility is Dress Blues, which IIRC is mostly a three chorder, but with a Bm and a Cm.

JI is a great talent.

Elephant is only 4 chords but to play it appropriately, you need to hit the single notes in the walk ups and walk downs, and get the hammer on A string at the right moments.

Here is a a very good tab that has the chord shapes pretty much right on.

http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/j/ja...ephant_crd.htm

And if you want to see JI playing the song, go here -- you can follow the left hand movements pretty easily.

Oh, and one final thing.

The song is a killer.
