Help-looking for a 24" scale acoustic/electric
Hi everyone. Longtime lurker newbie.
First of all, I'm a woman with very small hands. I currently play a Takamine P1M and Little Martin. I've come to realize I want a scale length between the two. So I'm hoping to find a 24-24.5 scale, though I suppose I'll have to stretch that to 24.75. The thing is, I love the sound of the Takamine and the cedar top. I don't care for any kind of bright sound but want a warm sound with plenty of bass, only I want it in a parlor - OM size... (I know, I know) So I've got a $1,000 budget, and hoping to get one with electronics, but open to adding pickup later. Want something that sounds just as good light strumming as finger playing. I've already been looking at Larrivee parlors and Alvarez. Can someone maybe point me in a direction that I'm missing that won't be a downgrade from the Tak? Thanks! |

The Martin Dreadnought Jr. has a 24" scale.
This guitar is awesome! It has Fishman electronics in it. All solid woods. Street price is $599 |

Yes, the Martin Dreadnought Jr. and the Taylor GS Min-e models immediately come to mind.

This Alvarez has a 24 13/16" scale, and might fit the bill. It will definitely sound warmer than a similar spruce top model and should not be a downgrade. It's street price is probably around $699.00 w/case:

If you are willing to go 24.75" you may want to consider the Wasburn WP series. I have played several and was impressed with the airy and balanced tone.

The Larrivée Parlor comes standard in the 24" scale length. It can be purchased in a few wood combinations, and also with a cutaway.
Adding electronics to a guitar such as this is a no-brainer...and I should know... Amplified, in concert (audience recording, not from the mixing board): At home, acoustic recording:

Thanks everyone!
Modell- I love that Alvarez, but I'd be more interested in the MPA66SHB parlor size with the shorter scale. This is a real possibility. I'll have to see if I can find a place to check out the Martin D Jr. Thanks for the videos Larry. I love the Larrivee cutaway. Only if I can find one in my price range. Simon and Patrick parlors scale is 24.8 right? half an inch difference with my Takamine doesn't seem like a big enough difference to get me the pull the trigger. Has anyone played both the Martin D Jr and the Alvarez masterworks parlor? http://alvarezguitars.com/guitar/mpa66shb/ and can compare? |

Jazzbonk - You should ask that exact question as a new thread. I know a lot of the guys here have purchased the Alvarez in question - you will get more good information from a more specific thread.

You might have to save just a bit more than your $1K budget for the PV-09...you should be able to find one in the $1200-1300 range (pre-owned), with no electronics. If you can live without the cutaway you'll have no problem finding one well under $1K.

In our house, my petite wife has settled on the Taylor GS Mini mahogany top model (scale 23.5", neck 1-11/16" wide), and her favorite is the CA Cargo (scale length 22.75", 1-3/4" wide). The Cargo might stretch your budget a bit if you get one with the electronics. She really enjoys playing more now that she isn't struggling against guitars that are "papa bear" sized.
The Cargo is also nicely shaped and quite comfy to hold, plus a joy to play, and has tone far better than its smaller size would suggest. It really doesn't sound like a small guitar. |

Yamaha
My Yamaha FS700S is OM size and 25" scale. It is very easy to play. I put Elixer Nanoweb Custom Lights on it (11-52). Solid Spruce top. For about $200 it is a steal.

The Alvarez AP66SB (no electronics, but can be purchased with it). As it stands, $360. Solid mahogany top, laminate mahogany back and sides. It has a very warm sound for a small bodied guitar. Nut width 1 3/4, scale 24"
