Girls high school basketball final score. Nice. And oh, the winning coach is suspended afterwards for running up the score.

I read that this morning. That same team is winning by huge scores and the team that lost also lost other games by huge scores. I wonder why they even played this game knowing the outcome was going to be at least a 100 point loss.

It was 104-1 at halftime. Wouldn't just good old common sense call the game at that point?

I remember when my high school played a game against Power Memorial High School in New York back during the LBJ era. Power Memorial had a young Lew Alcindor playing for them in those days. They annihilated us. Alcindor poured in 56 points in the first half alone. He sat out the entire second half and we still got no closer than 40 points.

Looks like the starters didn't even start the 2nd half.

I played 2 years on my HS basketball "B" team. We lost one game something like 116-34 against the best team in the "B" league. They were really an "A" team but since they didn't have enough students in that school they were relegated to the "B" league.

To tell you the truth, had we had known the outcome I still would have wanted to play that game. Learning opportunities. And sometimes a good butt kicking puts things in perspective.

Why? To perpetuate a mistaken belief that they can actually play? If you are going to compete at anything, you need to do it at an appropriate level and if you can't, you probably need to seek another outlet.

They should have sought out a quick exit

This is why I don't get sports. Fired for losing and suspended for winning.

It's the taking part that counts, not the winning or losing.

What?

What?
I'm not sure scoring 1 point in a half counts as "participation" in any real sense.

The other coach could have forfeited the game at half time. He chose to have his players go out after scoring 1 point in the first half and giving up 104. The other coach pulled his starters. That was all he could do at that point.

Well, the losing coach should have just thrown in the towel at halftime. Forget this nonsense that 'you never quit'. In this case, you quit.

As far as the winning coach, he was applying a full court press the entire first half, and then a half court press in the 2nd half. That wasn't really necessary, and to me a bit unsportsmanlike.

That's what sports is all about, quitting.

When you're down 104-1 at halftime, anyone with any common sense throws in the towel. It's certainly not about getting your brains beat in 161-2.
