Keurig
We've had a Keurig coffee maker for a few years, and I really like it for a quick cup of coffee before heading out in the morning, or for a single cup later in the day. But I recently retired, and although I still get up early I'm no longer in a rush.
I returned to the idea of a pot of coffee and got myself a 4 cup Mr Coffee. I'd forgotten the simple pleasure of the anticipation of smelling the coffee as it brews while I listen to the news and play with the internet in the morning. Plus it's way cheaper. |

I went to a press pot for home use. Nice rich coffee, and fairly cheap to use too. I still use the Keurig at work pretty regularly though. They're good for a quick single cup.

the Keurigs are good, we had some troubles with 2, so we purchased the cuisine art, but we also use the old fashioned percolator. the best cup you can get, good luck finding one of those..... maybe in an antique shop?

K-Cup (and other) single-use coffees are a quickly-growing business but are also a quickly-growing environmental issue...the downside of the convenience is Waste (with a capital W). But there are solutions...a number of enterprising businesses have developed re-useable, fill-your-own options for these makers. See this LA Times article for more info on the problems and the solutions...I highly recommend the "My K-Cup" by Keurig.

I remember the percolators, you can still find them. Coffee purists say that it's not thr best way to brew coffee, but I always enjoyed it made that way by someone who knows what they're doing, which is not me.

The smell of morning coffee, gotta love it.
What's the difference between brewing coffee and using a percolators? Does it use the same ground beans? |

Remember Chemex coffee makers? We still have ours. It makes a good brew.

My wife had us using one for awhile. I didn't like it. It was expensive, even with the refillable cups. I could never make the coffee as strong as I liked it either.

I had one and, while it's kind of cool, I got rid of it for two reasons: I like STRONG coffee and with the Keurig it came out puny (like a strong tea, really) and, as mentioned, just the smell of a pot of coffee brewing is a great way to start the day for me.

I don't drink all that much coffee - maybe one cup a day, if that - but on weekends I make some in the morning. I like the French press coffee pot. I first had coffee from one of these when my wife and i were on our honeymoon in Quebec (old city). We stayed in a room in a lady's house and she made us French press coffee every morning. It was the best coffee I've ever had. So, some years later I bought one, and my father in law gave me a bean grinder. I buy whole beans and grind them to a coarse grind, which is best for the press, and brew it with water heated to just before boiling, for about 5 minutes. Great coffee! I like a little sugar and cream in mine, and it's a wonderful comforting drink, especially at this time of year here.
We use Keurig at work, and there is no comparison. Part of the charm of it is the preparation, too. Jack

I bought a good quality grinder and grind the beans every morning. I usually have 3 or so cups, so a single brew machine has never been on my radar.
Someone mentioned the waste involved with the single cup machines. I'm pretty sure that you can buy a reusable container and fill it yourself...less waste and also less expensive.

If you have the patience first thing in the morning and you really want a good cup of coffee...grind your own beans and use a French press. You will be astonished at how much better a cup of coffee can be.

For me, a very important part of the enjoyment of coffee is the ritual.
Scooping out the beans into the grinder Grind the beans and take a whiff at the ground coffee... ahhh... Tamp the coffee into the handle... Run the espresso machine for 28 seconds. Enjoy. I don't like the pods for a variety of reasons, too much waste, coffee is a little bland (but super consistent), pods don't use enough coffee for each cup for maximum flavor.
