Default Japarts vs Allparts - Gotoh price discrepancy?

I am looking at replacing my Taylor tuners with Gotoh 510s in Antique Gold (21:1 ratio).

Allparts (TK-7263-002) has them for $180 and Japarts (SGL510Z-L5-XG) has them for $95. Something doesn't seem right. I would love to save $85 but want to make sure I'm getting what I think.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance
Vince

BTW - I also checked Stewmac but they don't carry Antique Gold

Allparts is listing the retail price and there are a variety of discounts to buyers, depending. In my case it's 50% on Gotohs, so $90.

I've ordered all my Gotoh's from japarts because I didn't know about the discounts from Allparts. I also don't know if Allparts has the different button options available from Japarts. Josh from Japarts is very good to deal with and communications with him are very good as well. The only drawback I see by going through Japarts is that there is about a three week waiting period from order to delivery because of Customs.

Good to know. I don't mind waiting.

Ok....so I'm ready to order and now I see that there are two different kind. The hole is at either 6 o'clock or 8 o'clock.

I called Taylor to ask which to get and they are closed for the week. Does anyone know which is the one to purchase? or does it not matter?

Can't you look at your current tuners and see where the hole is? My Taylor GA7 does not have holes in either location, so I would have to drill holes regardless of which I chose.

Your Taylor doesn't have holes, so either will do.* You'll have to drill pilot holes. Just be sure to watch your depth!... wouldn't want to go through (you can put a piece of tape on your drill bit as a depth guide).

* Not sure why, but it seems that most choose the offset ones (4 & 8 o'clock).

I've bought Gotoh gears from both Allparts and Japarts. I get the discount from Allparts because I do setup work and so forth for other people. With Japarts, the price on the website is the price you pay, but there's also international shipping, which can add a bit.

Japarts is particularly good if you want some of the more offbeat, lesser-known finish options that Gotoh offers. Allparts has a much better selection of aftermarket tuner buttons, and can get you pretty much whatever you want if you're willing to wait for them. (The fancier buttons for Gotoh, Schaller and Grover are actually made by a specialist company in Germany. Want a Grover kidney bean-shaped button in ivoroid for a Schaller tuner? No problem.)

Both companies have pleasant, friendly, knowledgeable people working for them, and both companies make it a point to be as helpful as possible. We're lucky to have both of them.

I got mine at Japarts. Taylor uses the 8 oclocks on all their upper end stuff. Thats what I went with. Be SURE you want to put holes in the headstock before you order them. You cant go back.

My understanding is that the AllParts 21:1 510s are branded as the Delta series. Curiously they are identical to regular 510s, save for the additional branding and the outrageous up-charge.

I have bought from Josh at Japarts before, and he is very helpful and cooperative. Like someone else said, though, delivery is very slow.

Every time I've looked at anything on Allparts, the prices seem ridiculous.

Allparts is the largest retailer and distributor of Gotoh tuners and parts in the world. You're correct that the "Delta" backplate on 21 to 1 gear ratio 510 tuners is Allparts' deal. The other retailers who carry "Delta" 510's (and there are a few) are getting them from Allparts.

Gotoh's own code for 21 to 1 gear ratio 510's is to put the letter Z on the end of the model designation. The times I've gotten them directly from Gotoh there hasn't been anything different about the backplates.

As for "the outrageous up-charge," as you put it, again, much of Allparts' business is to the trade and to manufacturers. Every North American music store I've ever been in and every independent instrument repair tech I've ever met is an Allparts customer, so if Allparts has something you can't get anyplace else, I suggest you talk to a sympathetic guitar tech and have him or her order for you at a friendlier price.

Hope this helps.

Those tuners are buttery smooth but wow are they ever ug-leee. Had some on a guitar and fortunately sold it.

FWIW I've become really sold on open-back tuners, which you can't get in 21:1, but you can go to 18:1 and that works great. Unbelievable how nice a featherweight headstock on one's guitar is.

These are not direct replacements so you have to drill holes.

That's why I am having a professional do the installation I'd end up either going thru or having the drill bit run on me

I was thinking the 8's but this confirms it. Thanks
