New - Old Electric guitar day
It is nothing special, a 1996 Epiphone Les Paul Special knockoff - gave it to my cousin a number of years back and now it is back into the fold. I believe Musicians Friend is selling it under Special II moniker these days.
Cleaned it up, set up the action and intonation the best that I could, using 10-48 Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings, played with the height of the pickups - at this point that is all I plan to do. It could use better headstock tuners and pickups - debating whether it would be worth to throw some Seymour Duncan 59's into it or maybe even EMG's. Brought some good memories from younger days, this is the guitar I gigged with back in those days, not knowing any better Might possibly add a Telecaster and call it good in that department. As far as amplifier goes that is whole can of worms to be sorted through, at the moment I have Fender Mustang 1 and an older Fender practice amp(bought with the guitar originally).

Ah, the old NOEGD (new-old electric guitar day) thread Congrats! Did your cousin take good care of the guitar? I think a set, or even a single, SD '59 pickup would do wonders over the stock Epi pickups. I love the '59.

Hello Dru,
Pickups would be worth more than this guitar. Think I will just throw on a better set of tuners on there and call it good. As is I like how the bridge pickup sounds, neck pickup I will still play with placing. Being low end they are both a little muddy and not well defined, some EQ can take care of most of that. Earlier tonight I played my Ovation through the same practice amp and it gets passable electric tone once I get the amp dialed in. Now that being said it was on the lower end of the volume, it was late and no need to upset the neighbors. I am sure feedback will be an issue at louder volumes, something I plan to exploit. Monte Montgomery runs his amps loud and pushes it all to the limit, the way he controls it all with his right hand reminds me a little of the late Michael Hedges, he was by far the master of the technique. I plan to employ my DBX160A compressor to fatten up the tone. That and my Morley Wah, pinch of chorus and a bit of reverb will get me close to where I want to be. If anything it will be a blast working through some Hendrix, SRV material

Well I think this guitar will be relegated to the wall art/decoration status, hard to keep in tune and value is not there to redo electronics and everything else.
When the time comes I will look into a hollowbody electric, the other day I was checking out Ibanez Artcore AS73? and it seemed like it would be a decent instrument for my needs. Also I have sampled Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin and that one left me cold and uninspired, surprising since I love Godin instruments. To be continued a few months down the road...

I would bet Guitar Fetish makes parts for a fair price that would make investing in that guitar worthwhile. I have some Dream 180 humbuckers in a 335 style guitar and they are fantastic. A set of tuners for around $30 that I put in another guitar worked fine.
Check them out.
