He was a funny guy. I think Robin Williams owes much of his humor to Jonathan Winters.

one of my favorite comedians. never figured out how his brain could work so quickly when he would instantly come up with different characters.
he was born about 8 miles from my hometown in ohio. they have the winter's library in bellbrook, ohio, his birthplace.

He, among many others, was an absolute scream in "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World". Very funny guy.

I have the CD where Jonathan Winters read "Paul Bunyan" with Leo Kottke and Duck Baker doing the music... great disc!

Love that movie, and him in it. The gas station scene, him riding the little girl's bike, but especially when he is upset at the idea of not paying taxes on the loot they hope to discover, are all seared in my memory.

My favorite bit by him is still the one where he's a pitcher, playing imaginary baseball, with himself! Loved where his "catcher" threw the ball back to him, twice as fast as his "fastball", and he'd wince, with pain!

Back in the late '80s, he did a series of commercials for the agency I work for. Didn't get to meet him myself, but I've listened to stories from the ones who did work on that account "back when." Apparently, once Winters was turned on, there was no turning him off. Which was a good thing.

I was a big Mork & Mindy fan, but felt that the headlines identifying Winters with that show really minimizes the vast contributions he made to comedic entertainment...

A truly original and constantly inventive mind -- I will miss him a lot.
A lot of the stuff that Jonathan Winters did (especially in his early days on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar) which was so hilariously funny, you couldn't get away with doing today, as too many special interest groups would find it "offensive." Be that as it may, Winters' humor always rang true, and the types of people he made fun of were funny in and of themselves. His talent for mimicry was unsurpassed. He once called Jack Paar on the phone pretending he was JFK and had Paar completely convinced he was on the phone with the President. It's too bad his manic depression got the better of him at the peak of his popularity. |
