Default Anyone Use Elixer Light-Med Strings

Just curious if anyone uses other than light strings on their Taylors and have it affects the sound or if it can cause any problems?

Do you mean gauges other than 11s? A mate of mine uses the 12 Elixir Phosphur-Bronze strings with no problems

Elixer Lights are 12-53. That's what Taylors come with. Just curious of the 12-56 med lights would change tone or hurt the guitar.

I've used them on my Mini and 316ce. The tone doesn't seem much different than I can tell, and makes it a little easier to play. I do like them better than lights on those particular instruments.

I don't have a Taylor, but I use them on my Rainsong, and I love them. I particularly like them because I play a lot of open tunings, and it helps keep some tension on the bass strings when I tune down.

I also just think it makes it sound fuller. Obviously, a Rainsong is very different from a Taylor, but I certainly don't think it would harm the guitar. It may change your neck relief (and action) some, but you can always give them a try and go back if you don't like them.

When I bought my 814ce new in '02, I wanted to enhance the bass, so after trying numerous light string sets, I returned to Elixirs by trying a set of Nano PBs light/mediums. They solved what I was hoping for and have been using them ever since without issue.

No, 12-56 medium lights will not hurt your Taylor. Full mediums will not hurt it either for that matter. Yes, changing string gauge with effect both the tone of the guitar and the way it responds to your touch. Only you can decide if the change that occurs is a positive one. Strings are cheap, try it and let us know what you think.

I use Polyweb Light-mediums on a GS-Mini. Easy Bending and comfortable. I use D'addario EXP light mediums on a Martin 00-15 and a Gibson CJ-165 to good effect with no issues. I've also used the Elixirs on both. I think I get a little boost in the bass response but I've been wrong once or twice.

I've tried a few sets of Elixir light-medium gauge strings and found that they don't handle hard/aggressive strumming well. I've switched over to D'Addario EXP19.

I've been using Elixer lights or mediums exclusively for several years now. I use lights only on my grand concerts (GC or x12), I used either lights or mediums on grand auditoriums (GA or x14) or grand symphany's (GS or x16) and mediums only on dreadnaughts (D or x10). The mediums as you would expect are a meatier string and offer a more rounded tone but are a bit harder to chord (takes more effort to hold a chord clean) and puts more "pull" on you neck which can effect the neck relief (but not always). A simple truss rod adjustment will correct that. I think they also "move" the top more than light guage and really opens up the sound of the bigger boxes.

I dare say, with the light/med. set you will hardly know the difference.
