Default Going To The Martin Factory Tomorrow...

...taking the day off and me and the missus are driving from CT to PA.
I will probably take the long way to see the foliage and enjoy some quality time with a beautiful woman and some fine guitars. Can't wait.

If you would...ask about the new neck machine and change from mortise/tenon to dove tail. Thanks, J.D.

Soak it all in. You'll really appreciate Martin once you have a chance to talk to employees (3 and 4 generations on Martin employment), see the magnitude of work-in-process, walk through the museum and take in the pickin' parlor (door inside store).

My primary words of advice
1. Take lots of photos.
2. Take your time.
3. Enjoy it.

Enjoy. My parents live about 7 miles from there and, to my everlasting shame, I have never been to the factory. Let me know if you need restaurant recommendations or anything. Downtown Bethlehem, PA is a lovely place to spend a couple hours, too, and it's not that far.

My parents lived in Allentown for 4 years and I was home in the summers and I never got there either. I kick myself every once in a while for that.

Fongie,
Here is a shot of the stained glass just inside the entrance for you!

Enjoy the trip! It's on my bucket list as well. The way the economy is going I don't see it happening anytime soon, but one day. Washington DC to the Gettysburg battlefield....then a Martin tour.

Default My Martin tour in August 2011

You are going to have a great time! I drove their from NYC when I was visiting my daughter. I took the road less traveled through all of the small towns in New Jersey and crossed a two lane bridge into Pennsylvania. I arrived around 10:00 AM and was taken on a private tour arranged by the Martin independent shop rep here in California. The workers in the factory were so nice and appreciative of the interest we take in their work. The skill and patience they take in building our "dreams" is inspirational. As the factory is quite new you'll want to take the time to go to the original factory and the guest relations can give you a map. There's a great little Italian restaurant across the lawn from the factory I recommend for lunch. Believe it or not the gentleman that took me on my two hour tour bought me lunch. At lunch I asked Scott why did you give me a personal tour as I 'm a nobody in the music industry? "Because you asked". Needless to say Martin has my future business. If you have a Martin you can drop it off for an inspection while you are on your tour. They'll adjust it for free if it needs something minor! On the way back to NYC I initially got lost for 1 1/2 hours trying to retrace my steps. When I reversed course back toward Nazareth I found a Pennsylvania State Police station. I went in and got some directions to the turnpike. When I told the officer I work for AAA in California he about fell off his chair with laughter!
