How can I improve the FM reception in my vehicle?
The small station I enjoy is about 50 miles from me and the signal is fuzzy and weak most days.
Are there any gizmos that actually work as a solution? (I fired XM for cancelling the Village) Thanx. |

Outside of installing a longer, more sensitive antenna to your car's radio, there's not much I can think of.
The problem may not be so much with your car radio's reception anyway, so much as it is the strength of the signal your favorite station is broadcasting. Different stations not only have different bandwidths but also different wattages they're allowed to broadcast at. This is all part of the FCC licensing process. Call the station and find out what wattage they broadcast at. If it's below 50 watts, you're stuck. |

If you have an old-style telescoping metal antenna (as opposed to one embedded in your windshield or rear window, for example), try playing with the length. If it's at full extension, shorten it a bit. If you keep it shorter, lengthen it. How waves hit the antenna doesn't always coincide with the sort of automatic assumption that "full extension equals best reception." (At least, that was MY assumption at one time, years ago, until someone demonstrated how wrong I could be.)
Good luck. Dirk |

If your car has the antenna in the windshield, replace it with a whip antenna. If you already have a whip antenna, you might consider replacing the radio. Many stock radios for cars are not that good. I have a JVC CD / radio in my car and the reception is phenomenal! They really made a sweet tuner for this one. I suspect other JVC's will be good also. Hidden in the manual it mentions the tuner has dual band IF (Intermediate Frequency), which means it can automatically switch to a narrower filter to reduce noise. This is ordinarily found in excellent home tuners but not often in car receivers.
