Jeff Beck can sing - just listen to 'Hi Ho Silver Lining'.

...and then you have Clapton, who is an overlap of the two, in a way. Relative to Beck, Clapton had the reasonably consistent hit songs, a sufficiently superior blues technique that appeals to guitar hero-seekers, frontman/singer appeal, and a "brand" or story that engages and a willingness to put himself out there.

To be clear, I am a Beck guy through and through - he is my #1 favorite by a mile. But I am not surprised he fits in the "musician's musician" niche relative to Stewart or Clapton...

I remember, very well, Jeff's singing on Hi Ho Silver Lining.

He sings about as well as Keef.

Don't get the comparisons...two very different musicians...Rod sold out, in the 80s, with the male-ballad crap. He's actually a fantastic blues singer, but that apparently wasn't enough to pay his bar bills...

Beck is a great guitarist, who seems to lack focus, on anything else, including his muse. I both admire and wonder at this. Such huge talent, seemingly reserved for other musicians to mostly enjoy.

It does seem odd, doesn't it? But, from what I understand, Rod had always loved those kinds of ballads and used to sing them backstage as a way to warm up his voice. They said that he knew them so well, he didn't even have to have the lyrics when he first started recording them. I also heard that he was so certain he could sell these kinds of albums that he even invested his own money in the deal...which was somewhat unheard of because he's known to be notoriously frugal.

There is no comparison Rod Stewart is Huge and mainly known as a Singer
and a showman whom went alone in 75 ' when the Faces broke up as we all know

But truth be known Rod wanted the Faces to break at the time
as he was anyway leaving that band for pastures new whatever happened to the Faces then
as he wanted to bring out his own material in which he always had up his sleeve

It was the late Long John Baldry whom noticed Rod Stewart playing
harmonica and singing while sitting all wrapped up on Londons
Twickenham Railway Station on a cold night
and Baldry thought he sounded very very good
and so went over asked Rod if he wanted to join his band

" The Hoochie Coochie Men " and Rod sais ye as was £30 in it for him
in the bands next Gig
and Baldry claimed on TV during Rods Indroduction into the
Best Of British some yrs back that they had a 15 min slot
just right after The Rolling Stones had been on stage and clamed
it was a hard act to follow and Baldry claims
that Rod Stewart had blown all and Sundry away
with a mesmorising performance in the Marquee Club in London

BUT he had to grab Rod from the stage afterwards as the next
act was waiting to appear
he also claims he had given Rod a Black Bomber
before he went on stage which yrs back in the late 60s 70s
was Speed and he could hardly get Rod off the stage
after their 2 songs LOL

Anyhow he Rod had went down very well
and as sais blew the Rolling Stones etc away
and he was sais to had been the best on the night
and the rest is History
these concerts mentioned were in Londons Marquee Club
in the late 60s ..

Rod Stewart is a musical Icon and sells out everywhere he goes
One of my fav concerts of his live on TV here just a few yrs ago
was from Londons Royal Albert Hall
and many i remember talking about his Professionalism
during that very concert

as at one point he had this young girl
whisked down all the way to London from Glasgow
just the night before

as he had noticed her singing while she was busking
on a Glasgow street the day before and thought
she sounded very very good

She was just an ordinary girl and couldnt believe she was going
from the day before busking on a street in Glasgow
to appearing Live on TV and singing with Rod Stewart
on his show

He Rod had began with all the American Ballads
in the first half of the show
which he was dressed for the time way back
and was shown in Black / White

the 2nd half of the show was in Colour and with all his hits
in which just before one of these songs
he had introduced that young female Busker from Glasgow
to the crowds
and although she looked very nervous looking
he calmed her a touch and then she sang with Rod
one of his hit songs partly on her own
and also with Rod to a packed audience live on tv
which is no mean feat

I always wondered what happened to that young lass and her name
i recollect was Amy Belle

Anyhow later approx 1 year afterwards was in our local
Scottish Newspaper a pic and mention of Amy Belle
and a story which sais

Maybe some of you shall have seen the Rod Stewart show
live on TV from London's Royal Albert Hall
where he introduced a young female Busker on the show
he had her picked up and flown straight to London

Anyhow since Rod Stewart had payed for Amy Belle
to go to America so as she can see how records are made
in a live studio with American band Guns n' Roses
and some other top act was mentioned

anyhow last i heard of Amy Belle she was sais to be writing songs
with some other USA female singer though her name evades
me for now

Ps Not good with naming new singers

Anyhow she Amy Belle since was singing and playing guitar
in Glasgow's Scotia Bar which is a well known music bar in Glasgow
and was known also as Billy Connollys local haunt
many years back, which is a nice bar ive also been in

Anyhow ive not heard the name since Amy Belle
and just wonder as to whats became of her ?
as she had a nice voice and also was a good acoustic guitarist

But Rod Stewart had thought way back at the time
when he was a young Busker in London
and at one time he was extradited back to Britain
for vagrancy from Spain
and still claims to this day that he is due Spanish Airways
the cost of that flight back to Britain

Anyhow the rest with him is history as he has sold out
all over for many years and puts on a very good live show
and still sells out well and plays to packed out audiences
everywhere he goes

Another fav of mine of his live i have on Video was at the LA Forum
in USA when Tina Turner appeared for a song or 2
and also a Kim Carnes

Ive seen Rod Live 3 times in Glasgow
twice by winning VIP tickets and Concerts were
at the SECC - Scottish Exhibition Conference centre (Inside)
Celtic Football Stadium (Outside Concert ) <--only payed concert
Hampden park Stadium (Outside)

He stands to be the best Concert Live ive witnessed ..

Tina Turner was i believe the best all time female Rock star ..

Meantime Jeff Beck a good guitarist
BUT id not have heard about Jeff Beck
if it wasnt for Rod Stewart ..

But Singers are always the well known ones really
and Rods an Icon and also America took him to their Hearts in 75 '

Been listening to Jeff beck since the early 70's and have always admired his playing. It's not always perfect and sometimes loses focus but other times brilliant. I just happen to be turning Blow by Blow on a USB turntable right now so I can load some MP3s on a player. As far as singing goes, some people think Leo Kottke is a good singer too...

Well, in MY house Jeff Beck has always been a household name, whereas Rod Stewart has been more of an expletive.....
But of course, when I was a teen Jeff Beck was already tearing it up with the Yardbirds, who were getting AM airplay in NYC; whereas the Small Faces didn't make it on to New York airwaves until the advent of FM rock radio. I guess someone a generation younger growing up in the UK (especially Scotland) might have a different timeline and frame of reference.
