Default Good deployment guitar?

Anyone have any suggestions about a good guitar to bring on a deployment to afghanistan? Have thought about a gs mini, but with no hard case Im worried it might not travel well. A cheap Yamaha might work, but concerned it might be too big?

Anyone with thoughts or suggestions? I would like something that sounds decent and is fun to play.

There are an abundance of good parlor guitars under $500 and they come with cases. A Yamaha would be good. Also check out Takamine guitars as they have built in tuners and they are bullet proof.

Get a used Ovation for a few hundredd bucks. Just make sure it's a deep bowl. They're well-built and plenty rugged.

Best of luck over there, and thanks for your service!

I'd probably consider a travel size carbon fiber such as a Composite Acoustic Cargo or Rainsong. There are other manufacturers as well who make smaller carbon fiber guitars. At least with a guitar made of carbon fiber, you'll never have to worry about heat or humidity and it'd hold up against any roughness far better than a traditional acoustic.

Thank you for your service by the way!

If the budget is unlimited, a carbon fiber guitar will do well in the harsh environment of the AOR (sand, heat, low humidity). My choice is a Voyage Air VAOM-04. In fact, Voyage Air did a little write-up on my VAOM-04 being one of my "go bags" when duty calls.

I'd say it's branch and MOS dependent. Being a combat MOS Marine I wouldn't think to bring a guitar on a deployment. If you sit at a desk or work in a shop behind the wire i'd say the only thing you have to worry about is the flight there and back. Keep it locked up in your barracks and enjoy the pizza huts they have over at Bagram. If you do plan to be at a FOB or travelling in country I would get a little Martin backpacker and call it a day. Good luck.

A Martin LXM would be perfect. Stay safe.

Ditto on this rec. SKS makes a nice hard case that's perfect for your needs. Keep your head down!

Talk to Jim at Guitar Rodeo about the Mini. He just sent one to Afghanistan last month.

God be with you, and thank you for your service to The Country.

I'd suggest a GS Mini. Maybe someone makes a hard case, not sure.

I just got the GS Mini in mahogany and it sounds great. Definitely a huge improvement over the other "travel" guitars I tried. I just took some pictures, so I guess I'll post an NGD thread.

Good luck with your choice and your deployment. Thank you for your service.

The Art & Lutherie AMI is a really good small guitar for not a lot of dollars. That is what I would get.

Thanks for keeping our country safe.
