Default One more Gibson sound thread ...

Just saw Joe's thread so I thought Id add a recording we did with my singer today.

We want to do this at our next gig , Stainds (Aaron Lewis) Been A While ... its one of those great sing along track with a bit of balls which we quite like ..

Played a rosewood Gibson Songwrter Deluxe ... recorded actually as a single track, direct.

cheers,

Thanks for posting that. I was just wondering about the Songwriter earlier today.

That guitar definitely holds up very well to heavy strumming.

How do you choose which Gibson to use in your tunes?

Thats a good question, and to be honest I dont really have a set answer. It mainly depends on the song style and if I was really honest, the mood Im in at the time .... I find Gibsons to be so versatile that they pretty much can fit any genre.

But when I play out live I normally pick the HB TV as the mahogany square dreadnought tone has a really full tone without being muddy, plus sweetness of the Bird is ideal for backing a singer. Plus she has an allmighy bark when pushed ... ;-)

I also recorded this as a backing track, in standard tuning on the Hummingbird TV a week earlier.

Ive been having a debate with my singer which tuning and guitar sounds better, what is your preferance ?

Hummingbird TV (standard tuning)

Well, I always like the flat notes, so in a direct comparison, I usually favour the slightly detuned version.

I'm not a recording expert, but isn't your microphone a bit far on these tracks? I think the guitars could use a bit more "drive".

It could be closer Joe, was about same length from the guitar which was probably around 1.5 feet from the soundhole. Keep in mind the track with vocalist was was recorded as a single track, i.e totally live . I had to try to find the right 'mix' on the fly .. :-)

Boy that is powerful! Live recording is a bit dry but that really show cases that guitar and Ray's vocals. You guys have a knack for Aaron's songs. I loved that "dirty country" song of his you did. What I notice is that you are doing a great job of using the guitar to mirror the dynamics of the song and Ray's vocals. It sparkles on the softer parts and growls when you kick it in. Good guitar and great performance!

Thanks again Roy, and yes, we do really feed of each other and work with dynamics during the song. I never think about it consciously, just sort of happens, but youre right, I think we do push each other and deliver the little extra and work with dymanics. It really helps when there is strong chemistry between the singer and guitarist.

cheers !

Nice!!! I was going to try and learn this "real quick" the other day and found out, to my dismay, that it's a lot more complicated than I had thought. Maybe I'll give it another shot sometime...Anyway, it sounded great!!!

The Song Writer Deluxe does sound nice. Nice job accompanying the vocalist. Good sound!

Real good stuff here GP. The singing and guitar both sounded great. My pick would be to go with the standard tuned approach, seems to match more to your singers voice. Although Im sure he woulndt have any problem dropping a half step....I dont think you could go wrong either way though.

I've seen Aaron Lewis perform live a couple times and his voice is so powerful. Unfortuntaley(IMO), he's veering off into more of the country thing these days

The pickin' pattern takes a while to get right Ryder but then it falls into place quite quickly and repeats itself, so you can focus on dymanics and delivery. Its why I like this song so much as it allows you to focus on playing it, rather than finding the next note ..

Thanks for listening !

Thanks a lot Warren. I think I prefer it half a step down the most, gives it a bit more of an edge. I personally like the direction AL is going, we also cover Country Boy that he did but we play it a little harder than he does, and it always goes down really well with the audience, even when they havent heard it before, which says a lot about the quality of the song !

cheers.
