Gibson LG-1
Can anybody tell me anything about a Gibson LG-1 manufactured between 1950 and 1955?
What is it worth etc? I had never seen one of these before today, and I would say it is in good condition. Any help would be appreciated.

Lg-1
I had a 1964 LG-1 and it is the same as the 1950's model.....Ladder bracing on the LG-1. The LG-2 has the X-bracing and two pearl dot inlays on each end of bridge. Other than that they are the same guitar. The LG-2 being the more desireable of the two. LG-1 in good cond is worth about 1K. LG-2 is worth a lot more. Hope this helps, Mickey PS: They are getting hard to find.

You'll find history and build info here http://home.provide.net/~cfh/gibson6.html#lg; as for current value, GC has one hanging around for $2500 http://www.guitarcenter.com/In-Store...AID=1112225183, but I imagine prices swing considerably based on condition and seller.

$2500 sounds a bit steep for an LG-1 from the 1950's, especially when there are plenty of X-braced Gibsons from the same period onsale online for less.
The LG-1 was a "student" model -- a step up from the mahogany-topped LG-0, but nonetheless, a ladder-braced guitar, intended to be supplanted at a later day if the player "got serious." You can do better than that. |

I'd venture that they would be round about 800 - 1500-ish for an LG-1, '50-'55. Depends largely on condition.

Yeah, in a private sale, you should be able to pick up a 1950s LG-1 in the $800 to $1200 range. Last year, a friend of mine snagged a 1959 LG-1 off Craig's List for $500 but it did need a loose brace reglued. Buying from a store will, of course, cost you a bit more more. There are plenty of them out there so do not be in a hurry.

Student grade or not, I really like the LG-1. Nice ladder braced tone. You do have to be a bit careful with the nut width though. I played a '57 at Cowtown Guitars in LV that had a really narrow nut (to me, though I know of a few owners of that vintage who are very comfortable with theirs).
Cowtown was asking $1700 for the '57, and it hung around for more than a year. Don't know what it eventually sold for. Very nice blues guitar, I'd say if you could get it in the $800-$1200 range, you'd be doing good. |
