Default Edwinson Zephyr

I just got these in an email from Steve and I thought I would share them with everyone. I know that Steve was going to post the finished pics in a day or so (when he got the first Zephyr strung up), but this is just to neat to wait for.... Hope you don't mind Steve.

This is Steve's new Zephyr model that is his rendition of a 00, filling a model niche between his Falcon/Siren and Consort. As Steve posted in my Consort build thread yesterday.....

The body and neck trim is Purpleheart. It's pretty exotic looking...so stay tuned! -steve
I'm sure Steve will chime in with the specifications (i.e. upper bout, lower bout dimensions, box length, scale length, etc.), but this first one sure is whimsical with its inlays....

And here's a couple pics of the second Zephyr he's just started a couple weeks ago....a Quilted Sapele, bearclaw Sitka, with a Falcon-style Florentine cutaway.

This Zephyr model looks to be a nice addition to the Edwinson model line-up.... Great job Steve!!

Thumbs up

This truly looks like a very special guitar - I bet it sounds as good as it looks!

Yeah...they look pretty neat, and I think they are both spec guitars.

Really nice work, Steve...a good addition to your line-up of body sizes and scale lengths!

I'm guessing the first guitar is a standad 25.5" (or 25.4") scale?

Would this 00 size work as a 13-fretter with a 24" scale?

There are several threads going on the main forum area about 24" and shorter scales (with small body guitars), and I know you have some experience with this on the Falcon/Siren model.

Wowsers! There's some serious planetary madness going on with those fretboard inlays. Steve didn't show me this one when I was in his shop a couple of weeks ago. I need to revisit him I think.

Edwinson here...Wow, what a cool surprise! I was just sitting down for a minute, and here's this new thread going. I've been dragging my heels on this--meant to post a build thread on the Zephyr, and now it's just three hours until the first strings.
Mahalo, Hen. You are like a stern, benevolent angel to me.

So, you want to know what I think of Howard Klepper?
Well, first of all, I'm not fit to stand in his shadow. The guy is a Zen Master. I don't think he even casts a shadow. Look at his posts here. He's inscrutable, yet directly to the point, and the soul of brevity.

The first time I went to Howard's website, I gasped so forcefully that I nearly inhaled my tongue. His guitars caused earthquakes and tornados in my little world. Then I saw these instruments at Healdsburg last year, and I felt unworthy to approach.
That, and the fact that Howard was nowhere to be seen. He had gone on a breather for fifteen minutes, as had I--it is such a high energy, full attention deal manning your table at that show--
I tried to accidentally run into Howard several times that weekend, but always the mischance. I didn't want to butt into any deep conversations, and Howard is a Popular Guy at an event like Healdsburg.

Man, I'm really busy today--but this is a lot of fun.
Last year, when I was building my website, I dropped some props for Howard Klepper (and the link)in my Design Philosophy section. There's this guitar I built back in '07 that came about as a result of a design spasm I sustained, under the influence of Howard's wizardly necromancy of wood.
http://edwinsonguitar.com/Edwinson_L...The_Woods.html

Scroll about halfway down the page for the Howard Klepper part.
P.S. I had a visitor here once who said it looked like I have some Klepper influence going on. How cool is that! -Steve

Hey, Larry!
Are you by any chance going to be doing guitar demo mini concerts at Healdsburg next year? Hint, hint.
The #1 Zephyr is a thirteen frets-to-the-body, straight 25". It's immanent--if I could tear myself away from the computer, I could be playing it tonight. I'll tell you how she turns out. My prediction--it'll be a lot like Hen's new Consort--which is useless to say without a soundclip--it'll be like a turbo Siren--but that doesn't help either.
It's going to sound good, is what I mean to say.
The Quilted Sapele one has the top braced for a 25.375" scale.

When I was drawing out the Zephyr, I checked with a number of scale templates to see what range I could get. All else equal, a 24 inch scale would fall into the sweet mean with a twelve fret neck.

By moving the interior architecture forward by a minor increment, a 24" scale, thirteen fret configuration is not only doable, but almost mandatory.
The thing about that is, I would also have to pull the sound hole about 5/8" north of where it is now, and that would make the guitar look more like Jennifer Lopez...walking away...with a bat clinging to her butt. -Steve

The Zephyr is very nice indeed! I especially like the Falcon-style Florentine cutaway. Thumbs up on the inlay and rosettes, too. And the bevel... Wow!
