Default Yamaha fg700 vs Silver Creek d170

Forget price.

Which wins in your opinion, and why?

Any input is welcome, appreciated, and anticipated.

I've played an FG700S at GC, and I have a Silver Creek 000 (but I've never played their dread).

In terms of quality and consistency, Yamaha wins.

They have very different neck profiles and different voices -- both are matters of personal preference.

Yamaha is a well-known brand, so it'll probably have hold its value well, but the Silver Creeks seem to hold their value well if you buy them when they're on sale.

The Silver Creek 000's pretty much own the low-priced all-solid short-scale wide-nut wide-spacing-at-the-bridge 000 category. The Silver Creek dreads have a lot more competition.

Silver Creek all the way man. All solid.. and a sound that is alive in comparison to the Yamaha. The quality is not that far off.. 90% of the yamahas I have played at Guitar Center have TERRIBLE neck angles. Yeah they look pretty but I'd sooner have a better sounding guitar with a not so perfect look over a pretty yamaha that sounds tame in comparison.

I sold my FG730s when I discovered Silver Creek.

Yamaha sets their neck angle at a lower "land" than may other manufacturers. I don't know why but it is consistent and not "bad" just different. I don't know the Silver Creeks, I know you'd love the 700s the way it is set up out of the box.

Of course I am only talking about the affordable Yammies. I have noticed the neck angle will require you to shave a lot of saddle material as was the case with my FG730s. They sound nice too but to my ear the Silver Creek was louder and had a nicer resonant sound.

on a personal note, i would never own a yamaha (or takamine) acoustic guitar. they don't make anything that i like, tone wise. they are about as sterile a sound as you can get from a guitar.

and their all solid versions don't change that opinion either.

again, this is mnsho.

Thats why the model T in Black did not last as "the car". Different than your taste maybe. But Lacking? A few million folks might argue that point.

i cant believe that some1 who owns a silvercreek is cutting down a yamaha. check forums including the martin. seems like 50% of any1 who buys a silvercreek sends it back. i own the yamaha 700 and the neck angle is great. cant see ever shaving the bridge. but let me throw another name. i recently bought a blueridge br140a for 6 bills. i havent seen a 1500 guitar come close to the sound of it. not even close

Wow. I hope your guitar playing is better than your statistics.

I have sent a Silver Creek back or two based on cosmetics and in one case less than stellar neck angle. However.. the sound on all of them was worth the pain of having to exchange for a better example.

Considering the price I would never opt for a Yamaha or shall i say Lamaha (laminates) over an all solid guitar that sounds waaay more responsive than any Yamaha I have played costing twice as much.

To each his own but as you can tell by now I prefer the sound of an all solid guitar. The fact that Yamaha sells a lot of guitars is not very telling as most of their guitars sold are affordable/beginner guitars.

Here is the Yamaha 700s... no thank you.
