Happy Birthday MLK!
Wanted to give a sincere and heartfelt shout out to Dr. King today, and give thanks for his courage, vision, and perseverance. He changed the country and the world forever. Certainly high on my list of great Americans and great leaders anywhere.

He'd be 80 had James Earl Ray not shot him in the face. Sobering. It all started with Rosa Parks refusing to go to the back of the bus--and looking for some support.

I'm also a big fan - and with what's going on in Haiti right now - here is a great quote of his:
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"

As a white man who grew up in the south, I never really understood the significance of MLK at the time. I felt he was a trouble maker. Interestingly I think if he were alive today he too would be very afraid of the person representing his ethnicity in the role of leadership. I have not "studied '' MLK but I did respect the man and his charisma. It was substantial in my view and I know he knew he had played his last song by things he said before he left us. Sadly I wish we had that kind of prophetic leadership available to us today. I can't say more as this is indeed "not the dock" but I will only suffice to say , happy birth day to MLK and I agree with the quote above. I received a reminder of that quote only hours ago by a dear friend.
RIP MLK

Amen.
A great mind, heart and soul. A great man. RIP (I plan to attempt to make a sweet potato pie in honour of the day; any expert recipes out there? I'm just relying on Google at the moment, but if someone has a family "secret" recipe?.... I won't tell anyone... ) .

We have come a long way since MLK was killed, and he was the figurehead for much of that progress. In some ways, we still have a long way to go, but the progress has been unmistakable.
Sadly, some have used his words and ideals to foster the very kind of racial division and distrust against which he fought. I'm glad to see their influence waning, and the progress continuing. cotten |

I think some people transcend the limitations of their own circumstances. Many non-religious people felt huge admiration and affection for the previous pope, Gandhi speaks to those who don't know a Divali from a chicken vindaloo, and MLK can generate feelings that things can be better for anyone, wherever they might be.
