Default Taylor Bass Question.....

Hello fellow Taylor fans.....

I went to to a little show the other night and noticed that the bass player was playing a TAYLOR acoustic bass! I did not know that they even offered such a critter. It had a huge..and I mean HUGE body. Big and Deep. Anybody know anything about these? I'm not a bass player, but I remember Bob speaking in an issue of W&S that he had no intentions to build a bass guitar. This one really throws me. I know the bass player but I never got a chance to talk with him about this little jewel. Sounded great and seemed to be easy to play. While he was plugged into a small bass amp, it wasn't turned up very loud and the sound was incredible for a bass. I'm not a bass player, but this is an interesting one..........

WHAT?! That's great! I also remember reading that passage in W&S and I thought it would be some years before Taylor took that route. Maybe a prototype?

They made basses in the past (~late 90s), but discontinued them.

Taylor AB-1, AB-2 and AB-3.

I have owned several over the years (both fretted and fretless), and currently play an imbuia AB-2 fretted at my weekly gig with Koaguitarman.

They are indeed huge, but have a great feel... not too loud unplugged. Co-designed with luthier Steve Klein in the 90's, and bears his signature inlaid at the 12th fret. They are currently discontinued.

here is a great video of Victor Wooten playing his modified AB-1. He is the king...

I like the Taylor because it's a Taylor, it goes with the general "acoustic" vibe of our show and it camoflages my ample belly!

I owned one and, as the others have said, it sounded and played great. My only problem with it was, as Steve Parr once mentioned to me, it's like hanging a Buick around your neck...

Now that the solid body 6-strings are available, don't be surprised if you see a new line of Taylor solid body electric basses. Seems like a logical next step. Wouldn't that be cool?
