Question Can you see the lines on your Spruce top?

I can see (and somewhat feel) mine easily without trying too much, is that normal or a sign of dryness? But also, I have read that the poly coat is very thin and can be normal. I just don't know enough about woods to tell OK from not OK.

(Remember apparently I am OCD)

Oddly enough, the clearest top on any guitar I have is on a little Silver Creek OM that cost under three hundred bucks.

Alex, I'm not sure what you're asking, but it's perfectly normal to be able to see the wood grain. As for feeling it -- that is a little unusual in a polyurethane finish. Happens all the time as nitrocellulose finishes cure, but not so much with poly.

Chazmo - I'm talking about the surface relief on the guitar. Not sure how to describe it, it's not particularly the grain but rather the almost equally spaced

I think you can see it on these pics - notice how the light reflects not smoothly? but rather with texture where the grain is darker.

It's normal.
It's called "silking", and highly sought after (for whatever reason.)

Here's another guitar with a more extreme version of it;

Here is a link to a thread discussing it;

Guys! Yes... I see the silking is beautiful (and happy my guitar has it now).

BUT! Is it normal that you can feel the irregular surface and that it is not perfectly smooth?

i think the lines being addressed are not having to do with the wood itself
(grain lines, silking, etc) but rather more about the finish & why the reflection
seems to be following the grain pattern, instead of being smooth as glass

the 09 716ceLTD i just picked up has a similar look -
my guess would be the electrostatic process used to
apply the finish may have something to do with it
