I'm proud to announce
that our 7th and 8th grade boys, Sacred Heart basketball team, won their championship game today. With a roster of only 7 players, they dominated the league with a final record of 23 wins, 2 losses. I've been an assistant coach since they were in the 3rd and 4th grade and its been great watching them grow as players as well as into young men. 5 of our players, including my son, are eighth graders so it was their last game playing together as a team. Next year they all move onto high school. We live in a small town without our own high school so the boys will be going their separate ways with most of them going to parochial high schools in the area.
This was our first championship, last year we lost in the final by 1 point. It feels good to bring home the first place hardware!

Thanks guys!
What happened after the game is really important as well. Because of a rule change in our league, Group IV, a player had to go to the church that he played for and go to the local school. We had a boy (Dominick) who played with the team since the clinic days and he lives in town, but goes to a parochial school in the next town and belongs to that church. As a result, he couldn't play in any league games. We took on a second schedule with CYO (we played 40 games overall between both schedules) and he was able to play in those games. After the game, the head coach said what we will do is each of us will get to bring the team trophy home for a week. The boys all spoke up at once and said that Dom should get the trophy first 'cause he came to all of our games that he couldn't play in and sat on the bench with us. That was a special moment, as good as winning the championship.

Investments in the lives of children and youth pays some of life's richest dividends. Thank you, Barry, for your long-term investments, and for letting us see a glimpse of the early returns.

As the baseball season approaches for my son, I can relate to how meaningful the whole sports experience is to these kids. I always appreciate the parents who are willing to coach. Congratulations.

Wonderful.... congrats Barry...by the way what happened to the "Star of The County Down" on your site? I'm learning that tune now and really enjoyed your playing of it. Great job on the championship.
