Question Would you fix this?

I got an Alvarez as a beater to travel... it has light gauge strings and I have to say it plays really well for what it is.

Question is if this issue with the bridge pins is easy to fix:

Would you fix it? If so how?..... the only issue is that there is a little bit of rattling....

I guess that's why they call them beaters. Not sure how you would fix that except to try a larger sized bridgepin (if that's possible).

Hi Alex...
Looks like someone subbed in some white pins that are not original, and they are too small.

Easy to fix, just get a set of pins that fit it.

Here - click

In fact take it into a guitar store that has a bridge pin display (usually a box with lots of compartments full of sets of bridge pins of different size and color) and find the proper fit and buy a set. Should be well under $10.

IMHO, a set of ebony or boxwood pins is a pretty simple fix. If you can get them just a bit oversized, and sand them to fit properly, it's a cheap way to enhance that "beater".

It's an easy, inexpensive fix, and there's no good reason NOT to get rid of those and put in better pins.

Check out this page from Stewart-MacDonald's website:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware...d_Endpins.html

Notice that several of the pins shown are available oversized.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, not sure if you can see the paper that the original owner stuck in there to make it snug... Would that fix the rattling?

Hi Alex...
Well, that depends on whether it is the bridge pins or loose string ends under them which are doing the rattling.

I'd expect that paper is not a good shim. It'll absorb some of the energy that you'd rather have transferred by the pins. Probably not a big deal, but that's my thinking.

I do think that getting a set of pins to replace them is a small price to pay for something that'll likely perk up the guitar. Even if it is a "beater," that is.

It can't be fixed. I suggest you just send it to me. I will pay postage because that is the sort of guy I am.

If I don't have bridge pins to fix it (and I probably do), I will drill out the holes, glue a wooden dowel plug in, redrill the holes, and use my tapered ream to get them the right size.

See, that is too much work for you. Do you want my address?
