iBeam Active Sound Quality
I just installed the iBeam active in my guitar and plugged into my PA. Other reviews I have heard on this forum accurately describe what I also found to be true with mine. The sound without any tweaking is very boomy on the low end, but easily adjusted using the PADI to achieve a very nice sound. I am pleased!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I installed the pickup in my Taylor 414, no c.
I used to be able to get my arm all the way inside the sound hole, but not any more. I will play with it some more tonight and get back to you with anyother thoughts. |

I spent some time with the iBeam last night. Some additional thoughts.
1.) I was boomy, but I was able to tame that with the PADI 2.) Weak on the high string, lacked clarity and volume 3.) Midrange is pretty good, easily shapable. 4.) A little metallic sounding 5.) Very difficult to get the 1/4 inch instrument cable in and out Overall rating of the tone on a scale of 1 - 10 = 7 |

Rick, are you able to record any clips using the I-Beam that you could post here? I used to have a 414 and I put a K&K Pure Western in it. I didn't record any clips of it, but I'm sure people would like to hear an I-Beam in a Taylor.

To be fair, I experimented around with the iBeam active a bit more by resetting the pickup position to compensate for the boomy tone. The result was a more balanced sound, no more boominess. Still, the sound was a bit more metallic than I would like, and the high E string was still slightly subdued. Also, the overall sound is not very musical. The PADI helped to metallic sound a little bit, but not much.
All in all, not a bad pickup really, but does not capture the musical aspect of the raw guitar sound. |

try playing with the midrange and notch a little more.....it will add some warmth if you get it dialed in. There's no doubt though, to my ear there is NO pickup on the market that doesn't sound it's best when it's used as it should be....for the lows and some mids and then use a quality external condensor to take up the other frequencies. When you get the right balance, what you get is what sounds like a BIG guitar.
