Default What do you think of this wood?

I posted this on the gear forum - I'm interested in your opinions. Here's the other thread: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/sho...d.php?t=404444

I'd like your collective opinion, since I'm still forming my own.

I just picked this up, but I'm not sure I like it.

On the one hand, it's not perfect, and that bothers me.

On the other hand, I think it adds character and makes it different from every other one out there. I like that.

What can I say - I'm complicated.

Take a look at these pictures if you would, and look at the wood grain. There dark patches in the wood grain, both front and back. What do you think of it?

I like it. It looks organic, like wood is supposed to look. The dark grain stands out and shows off the finish, and the subtle figuring adds complexity and interest. The grain pattern is fairly consistent, and the figuring offers some variety. They compliment each other. I would buy that guitar. I think you'd regret it someday if you didn't keep it.

Well there's two differing opinions.

It's really starting to grow on me to the point that "clean" guitars look boring.

+1 on liking it alot.
It's got some serious future mojo starting to bust out.
Don't get rid of it if it plays well.

GAD, I love the back and sorta like the top - overall it looks nice but the most important question is what does it sound like - feel like?? If it sounds great, new with a warranty but not perfect (wood grain? not sure what you're referring to - no guitar is 100% perfect there's always some little something) I say it could be a keeper. If it looks perfect and doesn't sound so good what good is perfect. Wood is a natural material and obviously some pieces nicer than others. If it was purchased online sight unseen you get what you get and then make a decision to exchange or return.

Hopefully you have some time to play it a bunch to see if it says "keep me", if it doesn't it's not really that big of a deal. I could be wrong but if it bothers you as much as I think for you to post for opinion I might know the answer, but don't just look at it, play it. I've passed on quite a few guitars that didn't speak to me without issue to find the keepers. Keep the tone in mind when making your decision - I did pass on one that a friend bought and now wish I had held on to.

Good Luck, Dave

It's gorgeous. And being a man of many Strats I can say without touching it that it plays like butter and sounds great. I wouldn't get rid of it for anything.

I approve of that strat. Looks like an Ash body. My friend has one--American Deluxw Ash strat. I made me want to sell my Parker. Solid. Your's looks better than his as I don't really like the darker sunburst he has.

Default I think....

I think it looks "real".... and "woodsy".... once it gets beat up a little, it will look like a guitar that some guy in Nashville owned and played... and played....

I think it's a "natural" looking guitar... which means.. not "flashy" which is what I prefer.

It is simply gorgeous. That's one of my favorite Fender finishes. Wood is never perfect. Minor imperfections give it character.

Looks really nice to me. I'd keep it. But your opinion is what really matters.

If you don't like it, give it to me. I'll give it a home where it will be appreciated. Seriously, I don't think there is anything unattractive about the grain figuring.
