I've been playing since I was a kid so can't think of much that came before it.

I have several other interests/hobbies such as motorcycles both on & offroad (have 1 of each), photography which I've just gotten back into, fishing & camping.

I don't believe enjoying any one of those excludes any of the others however most require some preparation &/or kit & need time on the weekends etc. to take part in whereas I can just pick up a guitar any old time & play for as long or as little as I please.

Scuba diving and underwater photography. I took this to a semi-professional level up to assistant instructor and continued my own education, got certified as a solo diver, ventured into technical diving. Living in Arizona, though, I eventually got tired of the long drives to Mexico, LA or San Diego, often bordering on 8-hour drives each way for a 3-day weekend. Once I started playing bluegrass, I realized that I could be just as happy - albeit in a very different way - with my guitar as I used to be perched on a rock at 100 feet, trying to get that money shot of a tiny, colorful sea creature. No travel necessary, no shlepping of heavy gear, no getting up at the crack of dawn to be on the boat before the customers, etc. I still have all my gear, and I'm planning on keeping up diving, but it's not a prime activity of mine at this point.

Jeez, so many over the years. I raced bicycles, I was into spelunking (cave exploring) for a while, I competed in IDPA (which is pistol/shooting obstacle course competition) and motorcycle travel. I once rode a motorcycle from Atlanta to the end of South America (Tierra del Fuego) solo. I rode to Alaska and did the Trans Labrador highway to Nova Scotia. Pretty much as far as one can go in any direction without putting the bike on a plane or a boat.

As these things came and went, and I had a blast doing them, but I got my 1st guitar, a plywood Yamaha, when I was 12 years old. Guitar has been the only constant in my life. Truthfully, I'd have had a guitar at 8 or 9 years old, but my parents didn't think I was serious, or maybe they just didn't want the racket in the house. Either way, I'll die with a guitar close by. Hopefully no time soon, of course.

Writing poetry. Photography. Guitar. I'm constantly trying to balance my time for these three pursuits. At other times in my life, hunting, police dog training, competitive cycling.

... shaking rattles, reaching for the mobiles in my baby crib and watching my mommie's face scrunch up when she changed my diapers.

Guitar as a main hobby? You're kidding, right?

Guitars are only for helping maintain sanity, so you can indulge in other hobbies.
