Do It All Small Body
This sounds funny...but of these mid-range Martin small-body guitars which would you choose to be a "swiss army knife" guitar that could sound great strummed, fingerpicked or flatpicked, plugged-in or unplugged...if you could only have ONE guitar...and why? (Yeah, I'm fishing.)

I have one small guitar...a custom shop in house build from Jon @ MFG. OM-28 Sitka VTS with K&K Ultra Pure Mini. On board preamp with bass/mid/treble EQ, phase switch, and volume control.
Here's a similar one in the classifieds from Jon but with Adirondack top. https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=530552

I will be no help. I have played all of them except the OM 21 and liked them all. A lot.

000-18e Retro w F1 Aura Plus system if you can find one.
I play full-time and this 000 does it all nicely...I put it thru a ton of flatpickin', strummin' and fingerstyle.

And if you can deal with it, Martin also makes 0000 “M” size. Now that is the size I would call Swiss Army Knife. Jumbo body. 000 depth.

I've owned all of these in one model or another. All are great and have their place and a lot depends on your playing style and body size. But for Swiss Army Knife of guitars I'd say the 000-18. Especially a GE model. I prefer short scales so 000 for me but if you're a long scale guy then an OM. After that it's just between the 18 for hog and 28 for rosewood.

000-15SM - and it's a whole lot cheaper to boot...

Since I don't think of a 000 as a small body I'm going to go with a 00-18V.

A small bodied guitar can't do it for me, even a very very good one. They just can't hold up and deliver what I want.

My OM-28 12 fret is a monster and will easily do it all! As another customer at Wildwood music noted 'you could play bluegrass on this thing'

My OM-28 is great when you hit it hard, but sweet when finger picked. It's the perfect all around guitar. it's pretty much all I play now. It's a wonderful strummer, a great folk guitar, terrific bluegrass, and a blast to play rock and roll with .
I often think that if I had to give up all my guitars except one, this is the one I would keep. |
