As much as I love Collings guitars, I’m curious to find out if it will sound much different than my current CJ35SB.
Can’t wait to find out though. |

It definitely has the wow factor. I listened to Bob Minner play "VanWart" on YouTube with this guitar and it sounds great.

They are displaying their NAMM guitars on the Collings Facebook page. They also showed a great looking SJ custom. I was hoping that maybe it would be staying locally but is going to Eddie’s Guitars. I would have to trade or consign to cover it and non-local is too much of an obstacle I think.

I agree Brendan. I can hear in that video that focus on fundamentals that I heard so prominently on the JLs, but with the added bass/volume of a large body guitar.
I am very intrigued. Hopefully my two local shops who are Collings dealers will eventually get one in.

I have owned two CJ35's, a German and a baked Sitka. They sounded nothing like the CJ45T Bob Minner is playing in this video. If either of them did, I'd still have it.
We should also note that Bob is incredibly talented and pull tone out of a guitar unlike most pickers.

Sweet new NAMM guitar - Collings CJ45 Traditional
Quote:
I agree. It looks and sounds like a great guitar but I imagine it will cost as much as an original banner J-45 (certainly here in the Uk anyway). I’d rather Collings had made a ‘no frills’ workingmans J-45 under their Waterloo monicker with a big banner neck! The original banner J-45’s were assembled from the materials available and I think it would fit with the ethos of the Waterloo branding. Maybe they could do both?.

From looking at specs, it does have a very substantial neck. At the first fret it is marginally wider than the standard Collings C neck, just about the same as the Collings Vintage Now. It is, however, significantly deeper than either of the other two necks.
Probably sizes me out of considering one, but it might well be that a CJ35 person is not a CJ45 person. I love the sound of the CJ35, but I'm more curious than excited by Bob's demonstration of the CJ45. And I'm very grateful Collings kept the haircut head stock!! |

It's rare for me to get too excited about new guitar models these days ( got enough to be be going on with )but I am looking forward to getting my hands on one of these.
There is a CJ35B here that for the last 2/3 years has always been either ready to use in the studio or by the couch for writing. That guitar has proved to be stellar. I would be very interested to contrast and compare the two. |

It’s beautiful, all Collings jumbo sun bursts are, and it has some wonderful tones. I definitely want to play one, but it seems to be lacking some lower end oomph that I’d prefer. But that’s typical for Collings to my ear. If it does have that in person...wow.
