Default Maybe we shouldn't list our guitars in our signatures

It messes up the search results when you're doing research about a specific instrument or luthier. Rather than finding threads about the guitar, the search engine returns any thread where the guitar is listed in the AGF members' signatures.

Just a thought.

That is not going to happen.
Try limiting your search to thread titles only.

Just out of curiosity, why do people do that anyway? I realize it is not just limited to this forum, gun forums and motorcycle forums I visit have people doing the same thing. I am sure there is a reason I am just missing.

I like that people do that because if somebody owns a guitar by a certain company or builder I'm interested in I can PM that person and find out how they like it and what they have compared that instrument too.

Mods, is there any way to exclude signatures from searches when searching through entire posts?

I've avoided it because I've always felt it's a bit ostentatious to display our assets so openly. But you have a point there. It is one way we can see who's bought what and see if any of it is stuff we're interested in.

I don't know much, but I have noticed a lot of expensive and impressive guitars listed in signatures. Never saw a signature with an Esteban though..

I think a 'limited' search option is the answer.
I like seeing if someone has a guitar of interest to me.

I don't really have that much to show off. I put mine there cause I like it when I see others that have the same guitars. Kinda like knowing who is in the same boat. Also I have had others ask about guitars on my list (like my Guild) folks that may be interested in that model.

I also like when people put their location on the profile

Most people who take the time to join a Guitar Forum, love their guitars. It is just of way of showing that love and sharing it with all the other insane people on the site.

I have actually googled a lot of the guitars I have seen in people's signatures to see exactely what it is. I have learned a lot from seeking out a new name or model here and there that I have never heard of.

I've never felt comfortable doing it, but I think those who do should include their address and work schedules!

It's interesting to me to see that some people seem to always assume the worst of others, while others always seem to assume the best. I know which one I prefer!

I'm weird, I know. I like seeing what guitars other members own, but I don't put my own in my signature.

At the bottom of each AGF screen, there is a Google Search Bar. While I don't know how to get the most possible out of it, I find that it's sometimes more helpful than the AGF "Search" tab at the top. I suspect that some have yet to notice it.
