This is going to be great! I had said that if I ever had the good fortunate to be able to have a Nautilus built, it would be a larger sized guitar. I'd want a slight rib bevel, too, but I just appreciate the sound of a big, bold guitar. Looking forward this this. Congrats, Brad!

Helping out with some build progress on AZCardinal's Wilborn
Update from Mr. Wilborn himself:
The peg head on a multiscale is not on the same plane as the fingerboard. A few well aimed swipes with a block plane gives me the angle required. Brad.jpg In order to keep the neck from moving during frequent tuning changes- think lots of different drop tunings, and trying to get all those strings in tune while the audience taps their fingers in impatience- we are inlaying not only the double acting truss rod, but also a carbon fiber strip on either side. Will it work? We are hoping it will, and it certainly won’t hurt. brad1.jpg Epoxying in the carbon fiber strips. They are .125” x .250” in profile. brad2.jpg The completed neck blank, with carbon fiber, and the truss rod tucked in under a Peruvian walnut spacer. Why Peruvian walnut? Because, man! brad3.jpg brad4.jpg

How did I miss this?
Man, the amount I hang out here I am embarrassed to be so late to the fiesta.
Hahahahaha. But seriously, folks this thing is going to be amazing! Mighty beautiful Woods for sure! I believe the carbon fiber will certainly help stabilize the neck during tuning changes. And on stage is the time you want to be quick about it! You can add me to the fans of your music. I listen to your CDs in the car, which is of course the only place I have a CD player anymore. And I refuse to listen to my phone. Fortunately I live in the country, and just now I was listening to the coyotes. Anyway have lots of fun with this. Its gonna be LOTS of fun to follow from here on Stay well have fun play pretty Paul

Hi!
Some Progress on Frogtar! 1. Strips of Macassar and Ceylon ebony, cut for bindings. They are cured in a tight, well aired stack to keep them from curling. Macassar, maple and black vulcanized paper strips ready to be glued up into binding loaves. Gluing Finished loaves. Now they get cut into strips, and drum sanded to exact widths. And here they are, bindings and purflings for Frogtar. Thanks for looking! Brad

Love the word "loaves" used for purflings and bindings. Schweeet!
Nothing more fitting than a Nautilus for an amphibian. Congrats Brad. I will enjoy following this one!

WOW!! this will be a super cool guitar. As good as the smaller ones sound, I can't begin to imagine the "magic" that will come out of this larger one. Congratulations!

I'm happily following along as well. I hope I get the priveledge of hearing this guitar in person one day. The Nautilus (at least in my head) feels like it's sweeping the nation in popularity, and for some reason, I want want too! Can't wait to hear it in your capable hands and look forward to this thread.

I like the sound of that! I don't know how thorough a sweep job it is, since I have built fewer than a dozen yet, but I'm trying! |

Well Kevin and Tom are pretty popular fellers, and it sounds like Brad is gaining in popularity too. You've got that going for you!

Here are a couple shots of Brad's headstock. It's a book matched piece of BRW, bound in ebony and maple purfling, with my MOP doohickey inlaid. I filled this wood with GluBoost Fill 'n Finish, which is really great for pore filling small or complicated parts. It ends up looking just like the pores are filled with lacquer, but there is no shrink back over time.
I love the figure that book matching can give on a headstock. V for Victory. |
