OK, OK...Confession is good for the soul they say...and since the cat is apparently now OUT of the bag (mind you, the cat hasn't been IN the bag very long, ha!)...yes, someone you know and LOVE has taken a financial interest in this one. I refuse to tell you who for fear that their wife may make the doghouse their permanent home. But eventually I will reveal this well kept secret that only a very privileged few know...Stay tuned for ahhemmm...clues

Default Working on the internals. Just some detail pics

So back to the cherry 00. I make an "L" shaped neck block. The top of the "L" supports the fingerboard extension. My necks are completely removable, Takes about 2 minutes to have it off and the reverse is also true. Makes neck adjustment a quick and easy job and eventually nearly all guitars that are not over braced need it.

Both blocks are Padouk. (I'm in my padouk building phase. I like it because it is so resonant and relatively light compared to most tropical woods and the interlocking grain makes splitting unlikely)

The pics are self explanatory. BUT, first a mitre joint

Reinforcement slots are cut in the back of the block on a table saw with the block in this holder that runs against the saw guide.

Here are the slots and next to the block are the maple reinforcement tabs that have diagonal grain.

Final reinforced heel block. Veneers with right angle grain will be glued to the inside of the block to strengthen it against possible splits, especially important because a mortise will be cut into the neck side of that block. The veneers will be fancy grained padouk to give some eye candy though the sound hole and sound port.

The tail block is home made plywood of padouk core and padouk veneers.

Thanks for looking

Hey Mike, I got to see this set up close and personal when visiting John late last year. Pics don't do it justice. You're really going to like this.

Default End block and neck block ready to go

Pardon the excruciating detail on this build. But this shot shows the veneer applied to the two blocks that serve the dual roll of strengthening the blocks (since the veneer is over 1/8 inch think) and providing a little something to look at through the sound port.

Interesting neck joint. The easy removal/reattachment is a great thing. Nice aesthetic touches, too. Interesting reasoning about the Padouk resisting splitting.

I know there are those who swear by dovetail neck joints, but there is a price to pay down the road. Oh, well...

Speaking of rolls. Your guitar rolled in today on a ups truck.
I'll put some photos up as soon as I can, maybe this evening

Thanks Oddman
There are those who swear AT dove tail joints too.

Me for one. I have been renovating this OLD Gibson L-00. Not sure what I am going to do with this neck joint. I should have converted it to bolt on while I had the box open cleaning out mold and spilled hide glue.

Love those old Gibbie L-00's. Looks like the stand came with it!

I am very fond of them too. This one needed lots of TLC. Could use some more. I have never seen one with an elevated fingerboard like this one obviously had.
I understand there was not a great deal of standardization around the Gibson shop back in the day, so who knows, some Gibson employee might have gotten a wild hair one Friday.

Those old L-00s were all over the map. Some with elevated fingerboard, others not, 12, 13 or 14 fret necks, all on the same basic body. Centerlines weren't much of an issue in ones I've been into, as illustrated by that neck joint!

The most TLC I needed to put into one had the back and neck glued with contact cement.Neck fell off when I slacked the strings. "Eloy" was wood-burned into the inside of the back, LOTS of mojo. It had about 1/2" action. Heck of a guitar when it was fixed, though.

Like to see yours when it's done.

Pat

P. S. I think we're digressing here.
