To me, a 12 fret 00 is the perfect guitar. Dynamic, responsive, projecting, balanced, great sustain, overtones... It's basically a classical guitar with piano strings. And it fits in the overhead!

All the guitars above are different shades of great. While I clearly have a favorite, the truth is I almost always like all 12 fret 00's I try. Where as with 14 guitars, is more like maybe one out of ten that really move me.

Great thread, I have really enjoyed watching/listening to the videos, so thanks! I'm currently weighing up a 00 12 fret trade for one of my OM's so this thread has been very useful. Just out of interest, does anyone have any experience/thoughts on the Sigma 00R-28VS? It's on the cheaper end of things for sure but I have heard good things about Sigmas for the price. If anyone could weigh in with some perspective on this model that would be great. It is another option that wouldn't require a trade.

You can add the new 0018 1931 authentic 2016.
There is a quick Youtube click from Namm, made by Maurymusic.
Waiting on a full review.

Thanks for your comments Eric. That is an excellent list of all the great things these little guitars bring to the table.

Thanks also for the great playing, the inspiration, and for setting the bar so high.

I have the 000 in that model an it is my favorite - I even prefer it to my GPCPA4 RW Martin. Just wonderful to play. Loud responsive perfect size - no upper fret access though. About Sigma guitars - you really need to try several - you will likely find a "good one" to your ears anyway - and that is what matters. I have played 3 or 4 other 12 fret slothead RW 000 Sigma's and none match mine. There is instrument to instrument variability in Sigma as in all brands. I often wonder if there is as much variability within a brand as between brands.

Enjoy the hunt!

I've now owned three different 00 12 fret slot heads and all of them have been wonderful guitars. First was the Martin 00-28VS which in my opinion is an instant classic in the Martin line. Next up was Huss & Dalton 00-SP which was also excellent. The last and most current is a Santa Cruz OO that is just mind-blowingly awesome. Super light weight/build, more resonant than any guitar I've ever played.

You can't go wrong with a 00 12 fretter. Pick a wood combo you like, select a nut width/string spacing and go for it!

I can't play fingerstyle, but here's what my 001 sounds like.

People like you annoy me! People who say they can't play fingerstyle and then play better than me! Nice playing! Great sounding guitar as well.

Here is my Martin 00-17 "authentic" (it's a custom shop with all of the specs which can be found on authentic series). This video was recorded on an iPhone, so the audio is pretty poor and the guitar was brand new. Now that it opened up, the tone improved dramatically. It's the only guitar that gives me the chills while playing. I feel its vibrations thru the body and the neck on almost every note along the fingerboard. It weights like a feather. Then, few weeks ago, I installed Thomastik Plectrum strings (13-56) and... Oh My God! The tone is huuuuge! Dynamic, full, round, never harsh, mellow but never too much.. You can softly play a romantic arpeggio ballad or push it hard on a Bill Broonzy blues. It never looses its charachter. I'm sold. No GAS here for over a year!

My favorite size guitar, conceptually. I've had the Collings 001 and Huss and Dalton 00-SP and I wanted to love them but I'm just not satisfied with a 00 as my only guitar. Moved up to a 12-fret slot head 000. That extra size is such a huge difference. Currently have a Santa Cruz 000 but I'm looking for my dream Bourgeois OMS.

For fun and travel, I just bought this '20s Supertone, which I've been seeking out for about a year. That guy that does internet lessons on youtube under the name daddystovepipe has one and I love the tone. About halfway between a 0 and 00 from my measurements. I'll post a clip when it arrives.

Thanks for the post. Interesting comment on the 00-12 vs. 000-12. I would think the extra size would be particularly beneficial when strumming. Was it?

What scale length is your Santa Cruz 000?

For others who have compared 00-12 guitars to similar 000-12 guitars, what are your thoughts on the versatility question?

By the way, here's the size comparison between these two body shapes:

00 and 000 are my favorites too. Particularly fond of the 12 frets. If I were to have only one guitar it would be one of those. I can't imagine being without my 0018vs. Just fits like a glove. No issues with strumming and picking in my mind either. I havelayed only with a flatpick til I recently started working to learn to play some Fingerstyle. Like everything about the guitar from a comfort/playability viewpoint. The size and the shape of the box is perfect for me. No problem with the mod v neck shape. It sounds wonderful to me and not just playing by myself. I play most weeks with friends who are mostly students of the same teacher. We have a couple of guitar players, a few mando players, and a couple of fiddlers. I can play the 0018vs with this group and it goes just fine. We do some Celtic, some bluegrass, some old time, and .... The short scale on this guitar is really nice for me. I always learn new tunes on this guitar and move to playing them on my guitars with longer scales. Used to have a 00017s (90s version). It is a hog top slothead, 12 fret, 000. Loved playing that guitar and would miss it even more if it didn't now belong to good friend and AGFer Boone. I believe the 000 12 fret shape from Martin is the perfect guitar body for comfort for me. I preferred to 0017s to the Martin 15 series for sound and beauty. Not a criticism of the 15 series. Those 00s and 000s are nice. Just refer the 00017s. I am sure I think the 00 or 000 can be ones only guitar. Particularly sure of you mostly play solo and cater to your own taste. If you get to two guitars, a dread can be a nice compliment.

Jeff
