Default I want a rug...

Hopefully people know what I'm talking about here, or I may just sound incredibly wierd...

So what's the deal with the quintessential rug that every player seems to have at gigs?

Anyone got the story on that? Are there certain kinds with wierd and different meanings?

well... marginally weird, maybe.

if you're talking about a rug on stage... many venues have one of these. they serve multiple purposes. one is to keep equipment (mic stands, guitar stands, chairs, stools, swooning singer in slick shoes), etc., from slipping around. if it's a wood floor, many places like to protect it. it can serve acoustic purposes as well, and i think for some places, it's just a little bit o' dressing, makes the place seem a little more homey.

i do have a small rug in the rig. (i also bring my own chair; i'm such a diva.) i don't always use it, but on the occasion that i'm playing on a tile or stone floor, it's come in handy. it's just a little 2' x 3' thing. i use it mainly to keep my footstool and pedals (tuner) from sliding across the floor.

i'm sure some of the bigger travelling acts bring their own special rug. and rocking chair. and various.

if you're talking about the various patterns on "oriental" rugs... not sure there's a story there, but maybe so. if i were to get one of those, i'd probably get a really cheap one. they can be kinda heavy to transport.

my apologies if you were talking about hair replacement alternatives.

Good post - I've found myself wondering that same thing at shows. Especially when one of the techs comes out with a Hoover to clean up the rugs before the show.

The wife would probably flip if I rolled up the Karistan in the living room and hauled it off to a gig. I like the look.
