Best one I ever had was a Honda del Sol, which copied the spirit of a Porsche 914. The roof could be taken off and stored in the trunk in about 15 seconds. I loved that car.

My wife has been driving old convertibles since about 1984. She had a wonderful ‘75 Alfa Spider for close to 20 years. Wonderful car that always ran great. We only let it go to her cousin when the arthritis in her hands made grabbing the gear shift knob difficult to impossible. She switched to Saab 9000 and then Saab 93 convertibles for a number of years til we got a lemon. She has been driving an ‘07 Nissan 350z the last 10 years. Least reliable car we have ever owned, but she only drives about 3k miles a year and loves to cruise in it. Probably keep it as long as she drives.

I love convertibles, but I longer have one. I traded my Jeep Wrangler last year for a bigger car, and boy do I miss taking that top off and riding around in a summer day. The car I had the most fun in, in my 50+ years of driving, was a ‘69 Chevelle Malibu convertible. Just a really fun car to drive, packed with my friends on beach trips, or just me and a lady friend watching the stars on a clear night. I’d love to have another rag top someday, but probably won’t.

My wife and I have owned five convertibles since 1977:
1973 Porsche 914 (well, a Targa) 1999 BMW Z3 2003 BMW Z4 2005 Porsche Boxster S 2018 VW Beetle Turbo The Boxster was our favorite to drive, but when we moved to northeastern Florida in 2019 (20 minutes from the beach), we needed a car that could carry two beach chairs and a big umbrella. The back seat of a VW Beetle is not great for passengers, but it can hold cargo - - plus there's a decent size trunk for beach bags and coolers. But I have to admit that the summer is too hot for convertibles in Florida, except at about 10 pm. |

I have a 33 year old mark 1 MAZDA MX5, what you call a Miata in the US. Great fun in the good weather with the top down on the twisty roads of North West Ireland.

Bought my first convertible at 50 years old. Drove 3 Miatas over the years.
Had several convertibles and in-convertibles (homebuilt, open cars) concurrently. All cars are gone. I still have permanent tinnitus, various skin cancers, and many memories of fun times. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] |

Love the look of a vert but not for me. Don't like the noise, wind, and heat streaming in the summer. The top can be a nuisance to take care of as well.
My BIL passed a 2019 Mustang GT vert to my wife. If it would have been a hardtop I would have kept it and sold my Mustang. But we sold it and bought a "newer" pickup instead. But yeah, they are cool

I've always loved top down driving and where I live you can put down the top almost every day of the year.

My two happiest days were the day I bought my red 1967 Alfa Romeo Spyder and the day I sold that 1967 Alfa Romeo Spyder. Like a beautiful Italian woman she was very high maintenance.

I've owned a succession of Morgan cars over many years. Used to be my everyday cars but now I'm older I've become the sort of owner I used to mock. Mine never goes out in the rain now.... I'm ashamed! I still love driving it on a crisp evening, far nicer than in blazing sun. And somehow, in a Morgan, everyone forgives errors of judgement, everyone smiles and waves.
Just to bring it to guitars...I once arrived behind the stage to play a big gig as part of a band. A stagehand came out to help me and saw my strat in the foot well and my ac30 on the little parcel shelf behind the seats. He said, " now that IS rock and roll"! Happy days.... |
