McNeill Custom OM
Recently finished OM custom guitar by Master Luthier Scott McNeill.
This one was ordered using Walnut, Koa, Macassar Ebony, Maple, and Moon Spruce. Gold frets. 5pc neck. The workmanship applied to this guitar is spectacular. Take note of the Somogyi saddle. Its as perfect in Luthiery Masterclass custom guitar building as it can get. Its easily the equal or more in sound and artistry and workmanship regarding any of the numerous Goodalls or Collings or McCollum guitars ive owned. Scott used a water based finish on this guitar and tho its very thinly applied its a mile deep in high gloss resolution and shines like a diamond in the sun. Tonewise the guitar has a rich midrange, a resonate and balanced bass, and the trebles are on the sparkling glassy side thanks to the incredible Moon spruce that was picked for this custom guitar. Check out the rosette. have a look... ---- - - - - - - - - - Last edited by Kidron; 01-04-2013 at 06:03 AM. |

Was not familiar with the name so I popped onto the McNeill website. This guy is building some exquisite looking guitars. How did you become familiar with his work...?

thank you..
it really is a wonderful guitar. fingers are sore Scott McNeill the luthier, is just the most amiable person. Whatever custom element you want he can do. He bracing system is unique to only a few builders that i know of. Ive studied this guitar for while and there is just no flaw anywhere. Every line, every joint, is just incredibly well done. Its "machine" perfect yet its all hand built by a gifted hand. |

I was in the market for a new custom guitar and was on the web looking around for Luthiers and ran across Scott McNeill. I really wanted to find a luthier who was capable of building me a certain body shape i had in mind and Scott loves to do this for a customer. We talked and got to know each other through emails while i also took a good look at his previous builds and i could tell from the photos that he has the gift for building world class instruments. The one that i hold in my hand is proof that i was absolutely right. Scott holds a deep and passionate knowledge regarding the art of guitar Luthiery and can talk "shop speak" about it and loves to share. He can tell you all the advanced whys regarding how he builds the way he builds. His incredible guitars are not accidents, they are well planned and perfectly executed Art which happen to finalize as world class guitars. So, once we decided to get a commission up and running i told him that i had a specific body shape in mind. I then searched for B&S woods and binding and sent them to him. He supplied the rest. He found the most perfect Moon Spruce top you could ever imagine. It is flawless and beautiful. Scott loves to build you whatever shape you want and mine is based on a Taylor Grand Concert body and a Larrivee LS body. I wanted the cut-away to be like you find on Martin Customs....sort of straight. He can do any shape you can design or have in mind. Even the neck is custom, as i had certain requirements about it being a bit thicker down low.......just a few hundredths, while tapering gently up without getting really wide or thick. I also wanted it to be round on the shoulders with rolled fret board edges while being kinda flat on the center of the back. Thats a lot of specific design for a neck and Scott dialed it in perfectly as if he is building this shape in his sleep. You see the photos and the guitar looks even better in person. Currently im on the calendar for my next McNeill Custom and im looking for the woods. It'll be another incredible instrument. Can hardly wait Last edited by Kidron; 01-06-2013 at 11:10 AM. |
