Default Elvis Really Could Play Guitar

Cards on the table. I'm probably the biggest Elvis fan known to man. Despite my bias, I would like to show you this video of Elvis in 1968 playing live with his original Sun musicians. He starts off with a Gibson J-200 and then swaps it for Scotty Moore's Gibson Super 400 which he keeps playing for the rest of the video. I'm not saying he's Martin Simpson, but for a singer I think he does a pretty good job. I'm biased :-)

You need to bear in mind that this is the first time he has played in front of a live audience for 7 years and he was nervous as hell. As far as I'm concerned, this is pure magic.

It's quite a long clip so stay with it at least until he does "Lawdy Miss Clawdy".

Thank you for indulging my obsession!

Well, mind you I like Elvis. And I like the style of music he was playing (I only watched 1 song). But I didn't see anything too impressive. Pretty basic blues progression. Some of the 1st stuff I learned to play. It's pretty easy.

I've read an interview with Scotty Moore and he talks about the old days of touring with Elvis as a four piece with Elvis playing guitar as the fourth instrument and Scotty says Elvis's playing added a lot to their onstage sound. Of course Elvis could play well. Shouldn't be any doubt about it.

What are we going to be surprised about next? That Johnny Cash could actually play guitar?

BTW, Elvis is the reason I first picked up a guitar! Saw that Ed Sullivan show when I was about four or five and I was strumming a broom and singing "Hound Dog" the next day! Of course I was to young and even though my folks bought me a guitar when I was about nine, it took until the Beatles and Stones came along before I got really serious.

I had the same Ed Sullivan experience with The Beatles.

Default Elvis Fan

If you are a serious Elvis fan - the Elvis station on satelite radio is chock full of stories form former band mates nad friends. Stories about growing up together, stories about playing touch football together, stories oabout recording at Sun studios and plating in Vegas, NYC and Hawaii and much more. I would recommend you tune in. They play very rare interviews and songs all day long.

Yeah, Elvis was a decent guitar player. I think a lot of people lose track of that because he didn't always have the guitar with him and Elvis often had a large band behind him......And Cash could play too? Amazing what we learn.

When I was about 10 years old Elvis showed up at the fishing resort my family would go to all the time in Paris TN. Bunch of us were sitting at a pick nic table and he came over and talked to us and played the old silvertone sears guitar that I had and really made it sound good. Will never forget that he took the time to talk to kids really made an Impression on me. Saw him a couple more times that summer and he always waved or talked to us.

Evidently he played bass too. I read a story about when the Beatles met him at his Hollywood home. When they arrived, he was jamming on a bass.

The '68 "Comeback Special" was the single greatest performance of his career. He was in top form, playing stripped down back-to-basics music, and he hadn't yet started taking himself too seriously.

When I watch Elvis- I think, there's not one American Idol contestant that even comes close. He was the American Idol- talent, material, and looks to make the ladies tremble. Yeah- it's not the hardest stuff he's playing- but his timing and execution is 1st rate pro. I like his sense of humor in this video as well- makes him seem human and not so... Elvisy...

And how'z about that guitar!

Mike

That`s easy, for me it has to be the Beatles, but then I`ve never really been much of an Elvis fan! Rock n Roll for me is Chuck Berry.

I did enjoy the link though. Thanks for posting it.

Steve.
